Generic Viagra Approved by FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the generic form of Viagra last month, and the drug's manufacturer expects it to be available in December 2017.

The drug, known as sildenafil citrate in its generic form, is often prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).  Men with ED have trouble getting and keeping an erection firm enough for sex.

Sildenafil citrate works by increasing blood flow to the penis, keeping the erection rigid for intercourse.

This medication is not appropriate for all men, however. Patients should discuss their full medical history with their doctor before starting any ED drug.

Sex May Be Good for the Brain in Older Adults

For men and women over age 50, having regular sex could improve cognitive function, according to British researchers.

Their study, published in January in the journal Age and Ageing, included almost 7,000 adults between the ages of 50 and 89.

The participants completed two tests. One was a number sequencing task, and the other involved word recall.

In general, people who were sexually active performed better on the tests than those who were not sexually active. But men and women had some different results. Learn more.
