Director's Message

I’m really pleased to be launching our 2020 CaRST Employability Series with Career Services: Navigating a challenging job market.

Running weekly from 20 October to 16 November, these five webinars will cover sourcing jobs, LinkedIn profiles, resumes and cover letters, interviewing, and networking.

Sessions standalone and registration for each is essential. So come along to the ones you can or join us for the whole series!

Social Media Platforms for Researchers

Leximancer:  An Introduction Workshop

Date:  30 October 2020
Time:  9:00am – 12:00pm

Delivery mode:  Face-to-face workshop

Leximancer is software which allows a quantitative analysis of text files according to word association. The analysis process gives a picture of the associations between key concepts in text files.  The workshop covers the assumptions made within a Leximancer analysis, and how the software deals with different issues within a set of text documents. Part of the workshop is a hands-on exercise where participants analyse a simple text data set. Limited places are available and priority will be given to Business School staff and students. Tough times. Stepping into an uncertain future?

Are things tough in your life at the moment? On top of the regular daily stress we expect to face, life can also present us with a wide range of challenges that are often out of our control. Pressure, uncertainty and stress can leave us reeling. With mental ill-health on the rise, it is more important than ever to talk openly about our wellbeing and find tried and tested strategies to help us move through tough times. Organised by the University’s Counselling Services, this webinar will explore the different challenges we face and what to do when tried and tested tips feel like they no longer work. Friday 16th October, 1-2pm. Register. Eligible for 1 CaRST credit in Domain B; students must self-record using the confirmation email sent to participants following the webinar.

Purposeful Breathing for Stress Management, Mental Health and Wellbeing

Breathing is an incredibly powerful mind-body link. Different styles of breathing can be used for different purposes and can have a huge impact on anxiety, depression and stress management as well as being able to boost performance in sport and study, and more generally move to states of peak well-being. This workshop will present some of the new science while having a mostly practical focus on different styles of breathing for different purposes. Thursday 15th October, 12-1pm. The session is free but registration is essential. Register with the Counselling Service by emailing counselling.centre@adelaide.edu.au or phoning 8313 5663. Please note this is not eligible for CaRST.

From PC to Cloud or High Performance Computing

Both Cloud and High Performance Computing (HPC) target scalability of computing- but what is the difference? This webinar from Intersect will give a good overview to researchers thinking to make a move from their local computer to Cloud or High Performance Computing Cluster. 12pm – 1pm, 6 October 2020 via Zoom webinar. Register. Eligible for 1 CaRST credit; students must self-record using the certificate of completion emailed to participants following the webinar.

Hacky Hour for researchers: Compute services (AWS, HPC, Openstack, etc)

Hacky hour is an informal meetup for researchers to bring their questions and discuss technology-related issues with experts. The theme for the next session is Compute services (AWS, HPC, Openstack, etc) | October 13 @ 3 pm.  For further info and to register.  Please note this is not eligible for CaRST.

LabArchives Electronic Research Notebook

This session will help researchers and HDR students who want to learn how to collaborate, update, and manage research data using the LabArchive Electronic Research Notebook system.  Monday 12 October 2020 at 1:30pm and Wednesday 4 November 2020 at 1:30pm via Zoom.  Register here.

Create Your Researcher Profile

This session for academics, HDR students, and titleholders will support you to find, edit, and update your Researcher Profile.  Tuesday 13 October 2020 at 11:00am and Thursday 29 October at 1:30pm via Zoom. Register here.

Endnote Essentials

As your research becomes more complex, the number of resources you need to manage and track increases. EndNote Essentials is an online course to help you learn the skills you need to get up and running with EndNote. Completing the self-paced online course will give you an understanding of the functions of Endnote and how it can be a tool to support you in your studies. Enrol in Endnote Essentials through MyUni 

Research Data Management

Preparing, organising, analysing, storing and sharing research data are the key steps to effective data management. The Library offers a self-paced MyUni course on everything you need to know to get started with Managing Your Research Data. Eligible for CaRST points on completion and a quiz, this flexible online course covers tools and strategies to begin your research data organisation. Enrol through MyUni .

New digital research courses from QCIF

Through a partnership between Intersect and QCIF, additional digital research courses will now be available to University of Adelaide researchers and research students. The first two courses on offer are: Statistical Comparisons using R on Fri, 16 October 2020, 8:30am – 4:30pm and Exploring and Predicting Using Linear Regression on Thu, 22 October 2020, 8:30am – 4:30pm. You will need to register your interest for both by joining the waitlist using your University email. Tickets will be allocated to a few researchers from every member University two weeks prior to the course.

 

Industry Opportunities

The Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) Program and Scholarship

IEP scholarships are now available to support eligible domestic and international students who undertake an industry placement as part of their PhD. The University of Adelaide’s Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) program involves participation in an industry placement of 1-3 months (FTE) in duration, together with the completion of a number of Career and Research Skills Training (CaRST) and other professional development activities. Completion of the IEP, including the CaRST credit courses, will be reflected as a statement on the academic transcript. For information about this program, including the application process, please visit the IEP website.

APR Internship Opportunities Available!

The University of Adelaide has partnered with APR.Intern to expand the range of placement opportunities available to our PhD students. At this time, there are lots of exciting opportunities available for SA. APR.Intern facilitates short term 3-5 month placements for students to apply their research expertise to projects while gaining invaluable industry experience.
