June is much better than January

Welcome to summer, people! Folk are out driving, detailing and enjoying their awesome cars!

Father's Day is coming up on Sunday, June 15. Make the most of it!

Car wax for Father's Day

There's something eminently satisfying about putting a nice coat of wax onto your clean car. There's a real emotion in it. Pride. Pleasure. Self-worth.

Here's how to apply wax by hand:

  1. SHADE
Apply wax in the shade. Wax can dry hard in direct sunlight and that makes buffing difficult.

  2. DRY
Dry your car thoroughly before applying wax. Water droplets can make the wax streak and then it's tough to buff off. Use a Metro Master Blaster air dryer or a microfiber drying towel.

  3. THIN COAT
Apply a thin coat of wax using a foam applicator. A thin coat is easy to buff off. You can't get a deep, lush shine by trying one thick coat of wax. Using too much product makes it streaky and difficult to buff off.

  4. BUFF
Buff the haze off with a microfiber towel. Your paint will buff to a radiant shine as you remove the wax with the towel. Microfibers do not shed lint, they trap wax residue and they polish your car as you buff. Fold and rotate your towel frequently so you're always buffing with a clean side.

  5. SECOND COAT
If you want more shine, wait for the wax to cure (see directions on the label, cure times are often 12 to 20 hours) and then apply a second thin coat of wax.

  6. CORRECTIONS
If you see any imperfections or streaks in your wax coating, spritz on a quick detail spray like Griot's Garage Speed Shine or Victoria Wax Quick Detail and buff the problem area.

Enjoy yourself! And enjoy your wax finish.

Which product to buy?

What qualities to consider in a car wax product?

  • What kind of shine will it give?
Natural carnabua wax creates a deep, lucious, wet-looking shine. Some synthetic waxes have a lesser shine, but can last longer than natural wax.
  • How long will it last?
Most waxes last 2-4 months, some last up to 12 months.
  • Does it look good on dark paintwork?
Manufacturers will explicitly state if a particular wax product is designed for dark colors.
  • How easy is it to apply?
Natural waxes can have a harder consistency than soft synthetic waxes, however many manufacturers have created blended waxes to make natural wax easier to apply.
  • What kind of protection will it give my paintwork?
Carnauba wax is a natural UV protectant. Some synthetic additives also add UV protection. Check the manufacturer's product description for protective ingredients.
  • How much does it cost?
Prices range from $20 to many $100s of dollars. You will need to weigh the cost against the benefits and results you want from your wax.
