NICE has launched a two-week series of consultations on updates to its guidelines covering type 1, type 2, diabetes in children and management of feet in diabetes. Four separate public consultations opened on Thursday, 25 April, and will run until Wednesday, 8 May. The Diabetes.co.uk Support Forum represents the voice of almost one in 10 of the UK’s diabetes population after its forum reached the 300,000-member milestone this month. The Diabetes Forum has surpassed 300,000 members – meaning it now provides support to over 7.5% of the 3.8million people currently living with diabetes in the UK. Available as a web and mobile app, the Diabetes Forum provides peer support – enabling people with diabetes to questions, share experiences and find support. The Diabetes Forum can be accessed from Diabetes.co.uk, which celebrated its 16thanniversary this month. Diabetes.co.uk reaches over three million visitors a month with 650,000 members, having launched in 2003 in response to a need for a digital platform for people with diabetes. The winner of the Rowan Hillson Insulin Safety Award 2018 was announced last night. Dr Kath Higgins, Consultant in Diabetes Care and Clinical Lead for Inpatient Diabetes Care at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, triumphed for a project which reduces insulin errors and in-hospital DKA. The latest theme for the national competition was ‘The best inpatient educational programme for healthcare professionals’. There were seven entries and the overall standard was described as "high". An updated version of NICE’s Safer insulin prescribing has been published. The document summarises the evidence base on safer insulin prescribing and was first published in January 2017. It is not formal NICE guidance, but has been made available to support the optimisation of medicines. Following a specific intervention programme leads to a ‘clinically relevant and cost-effective improvement’ in older people with type 2 diabetes and frailty, research has suggested. The study, Effectiveness of a multimodal intervention in functionally impaired older people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, was conducted across 74 trial sites in seven European countries. These further findings into type 2 diabetes frailty come just months after it was announced that the new GP contract would factor in frailty into individualised diabetes care planning with Professor Alan Sinclair playing an important role in much of the work. Registration for Diabetes Professional Care 2019 (DPC2019) has now opened for all healthcare professionals (HCPs). Organisers have also announced that Professor Jonathan Valabhji OBE, the National Clinical Director for Obesity and Diabetes, NHS England, and Dr Partha Kar, Diabetes Consultant and the National Associate Clinical Director Diabetes, NHS England, will return to deliver an update from the NHSE Diabetes Team, for DPC2019‘s opening Keynote on October 29. Revealed: The UK's top 30 insulin researchersA new list of the UK's insulin research leaders has been revealed as part of a Diabetes Times series. The list is based on the impact of research published by the authors and has been produced by Expertscape, the world’s leading index of academic achievement and expertise in healthcare. To arrive at its rankings, Expertscape based the results on scientific publications, with both impact and frequency taken into account. The NHS cost of diabetic footcare in England is more than the combined financial outlay by the health service on breast, prostate and lung cancers, a study has found. The research, published in Diabetic Medicine, was carried out by a team of leading experts looking to estimate the amount spent on treating diabetic foot disease. The award-winning Low Carb Program will be featured as part of a healthcare innovation WebEx, it has been announced. Diabetes Digital Media – which launched the initiative in 2015 – said it will form part of the Big Innovation Conversation via WebEx, led by the Innovation Agency, the North West Coast Academic Health Strategic Science Network (AHSN). The Association of British Clinical Diabetologists, best known as ABCD, plans to work in collaboration with DPC.
