1. ASF “This is the biggest animal disease outbreak we’ve ever had on the planet”

“This is the biggest animal disease outbreak we’ve ever had on the planet”, says Dirk Pfeiffer of City University of Hong Kong, as South-East Asia battles to contain the disease, and a large outbreak on a pig farm is reported in Poland.

2. Today is World Food Safety Day

Ireland has launched a food safety information campaign and reflects on the stringent food safety systems in place in the country. The WHO reminds us that 23 million people fall ill from unsafe food each year in Europe.

3. Atypical BSE case in Brazil leads to temporary suspension of Chinese exports

The Brazilian Ministry for Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply has announced the temporary suspension of beef exports to China following a case of Atypical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy in the state of Mato Grosso.

4. Suspected horse fraud: criminal investigation unit in Ireland carries out searches on farms

A number of farms were searched this morning by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation in connection with a suspected fraud involving fake horse identity chips.

5. EFSA update on listeriosis outbreak due to cold smoked salmon

WGS (whole genome sequencing) has been used to track this outbreak back to a processing plant in Estonia, which has affected 22 people in 5 countries since 2014. (See also our story from Week 13)

7. U.S. measles cases in first five months of 2019 surpass total cases per year for past 25 years

Today, CDC is reporting 971 cases of measles in the United States thus far in 2019. This is the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since 1994, when 963 cases were reported for the entire year.

8. Several recalls in the UK and US this week due to foreign materials

Breakfast cereals and hash browns have been recalled in the UK and Ireland, and over 95,000 lbs of smoked sausages in the U.S., all due to plastic contamination.

9. Scientists urge surgeon general to issue warning about unwashed poppy seeds

In a letter to the country’s top medical official, the Center for Science in the Public Interest asked U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams to issue an advisory warning people of the dangers of contaminated, unwashed poppy seeds and poppy seed pods.
