Notes from the Pastor

As mentioned at the two open house events last month, I am a member of the Pittsburgh-East Regional Catholic Elementary Schools Advisory Board. I, along with five other pastors and 5 lay professional women and men, have been charged with review of the 14 parish-sponsored Elementary Schools in the "east region". The review and discussions will lead to recommendations to the Diocesan Schools Office, and ultimately the Bishop, to assist in determining the future look of Catholic education in this area. Every school will be reviewed separately. One size does not fit all. Not every school will be affected in the manner of merging or closure. Please click on the link www.diopitt.org/pgh-east for updated information and an opportunity for you to submit questions about the process.

Advent Season is upon us

The Advent Season is a time of prayer and anticipation during the four weeks leading up to Christmas. The liturgical season begins the new church year on Sunday, December 3. Use this special time to focus on the real meaning of Christmas.

The entire school will assemble in the auditorium on Wednesday, December 6 for our Advent Prayer Circle. Half of the student body will pray at 9:05 a.m. and the other half at 9:45 a.m. Students in 2nd grade will lead us in prayer. Parents and friends of our school are invited to come and pray with us.

Notes from the Office

Kindergarten and Preschool Registration

We are accepting registrations for new students for the 2018-2019 school year. If you have younger children whom you are planning to send to SHES next year, you should start the process now. Kindergarten and Preschool currently have openings for next year, but wait lists normally begin after the holidays. Registration forms are available at the school office or on our website. A tour can be scheduled upon request.

Lunch Monitor tips (Taken from “Parent Lunch Duty Guidelines”)
Indoor Recess on Bad Weather Days:

As cold and snowy weather approaches, the children will be having indoor recess more frequently. When supervising the children, parents should:

  • walk from room to room
to monitor children in their classrooms.

Students should:

  • be seated at desks or on the floor
  • use indoor voices while engaged in activities, i.e. games, cards, projects, etc.
  • stay in their homerooms
  • use restrooms or visit lockers only with permission of supervising teachers and parents
  • have no food or drink in classrooms

Tuition Payment Due
If you pay your tuition by semester, your second payment is due January 15, 2018. Contact Laura Abinader at the Parish Tuition Office for your current balance.

Family Christmas ornaments

As we prepare for the Advent season, we also prepare our Family Christmas Trees at Sacred Heart School. There will be trees on each floor of the school decorated with one ornament from each school family.

If you are new to SHES or haven't yet sent an ornament to represent your family, please send us one. The ornament can be bought or homemade. Please put your family's name on the ornament, along with the year your child(ren) were first enrolled at Sacred Heart School.

We use the ornaments from year to year to remember all who have been part of the school family over time. The children love to put their family ornament on the tree and proudly show it to their friends.

Safe Environment Training

Parent volunteer clearances come to the school office every day and are recorded on your database application with the diocese. Two years ago, the state of Pennsylvania passed Act 126, requiring all employees and volunteers to take the Mandated and Permissive Reporting Training Course. The course is offered on the University of Pittsburgh website https://www.reportabusepa.pitt.edu and must be completed within three months of registration on the database. Many of our parents need to take the  course. While It is very good and well presented, it is 3 hours in length, thus deterring people from tackling it. However, the good news is that you can start and stop as needed. The program continues where you left off when you begin again.

Please make time to complete the requirement of Act 126. It is necessary for compliance with the Safe Environment Program. Send the certificate to the school office upon completion.

Sacred Heart ice skating night

Sacred Heart will be hosting an ice skating party for the whole school.  The ice skating party will take place on Monday, December 4th from 4:00-6:30 p.m. at Schenley Oval Ice Rink.  The cost is $10 per skater and includes admission and skate rental.  RSVP forms were sent via Option C.  Please send in your forms and payment (checks made payable to Sacred Heart) to the school office.  If you have questions, please contact Amy Hunt at amy-hunt@comcast.net.

Hoagie Sale wrap up

Thank you to the 111 Sacred Heart families who participated in the hoagie sale.  Because of your support, $2,653 was raised.  In addition, your generosity enabled us to doate 210 hoagies and other food items to the East End Cooperative Ministry.  Thank you also to all of the volunteers who helped make this fundraiser a success!

Soccer 2017 wrap up

The fall season has been a great one for the Varsity and JV Soccer players! Both teams enjoyed successful seasons with students in 4th-8th grades partaking in soccer fun.

A special congratulations to our JV soccer team who won the Diocesan World Cup Championship for our division. Way to go Crusaders!

As the fall season comes to a close, we are looking forward to an equally successful spring season. Be on the lookout for future updates on spring soccer practice starting in late March/early April. New players are always welcome!

Boys volleyball

For the first time in several years, Sacred Heart will be participating in Diocesan boys volleyball. All boys in 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grades are encouraged to attend volleyball open gyms beginning this Sunday, December 3rd from 1:00-2:30.  If you can jump, move from side to side and back and forth, consider playing this easy to learn and really fun sport. Practices will begin as basketball season comes to an end. The spring volleyball season is a short 7 weeks with an additional two weeks for playoffs. Give it a try - you won't be sorry!

Christmas basketball tournament

The Athletic Association's biggest fundraiser is the Christmas Tournament held yearly from December 26th through December 30th. We host 32 teams from around the Diocese and raise money to benefit all sports programs.

This year, we are looking for volunteers to help coordinate the Christmas Tournament. We still need people to help with trophies, t-shirts, and to be present in the gym during this week. Please be on the lookout for more information soon.

December food: Rice

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect rice to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Christian Leadership Team members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
