Literacy Week February 11 – 15Book Exchange on Friday, February 15thTeachers and the PSG are currently planning a week full of wonderful literacy activities! We need your help! Two weeks before the book exchange, we will be collecting age appropriate children's books in any language! When your child brings in books, they will receive tokens for the books they bring. Then, at the book fair, they will get to use those tokens in exchange for other books. As many of you may be traveling back home, this would be a great time to bring a few books back with you. Find used children's books at a garage sale. Buy your child a new book to read on the trip home. They could use this book to trade for another book during the exchange. Happy holidays and happy book hunting! Why Be a Girl Scout Leader?A persuasive essay by a 10yo student.A note from the school: We are interested in starting a Girl Scout and Boy Scout troop at our school. Please contact the school if you are interested in being a troop leader! Have you ever wanted to get more involved in your daughter’s life? Well you can become a girl scout leader. I have 3 reasons why. first, you can teach girls life skills and success orientations which is going to be very useful for their future. Girl scouts can demonstrate care for our community by helping clean roads and recycling. You can help your daughter make new friends. As I said you can teach girls life skills and success orientations which is going to be very useful in the future. The life skills I mean is money management skills which when girls are older and have a job it will most likely have money management in it. So, it will be a good thing for girls to learn it while there young so there going to be a pro in the future. In QSI we have awards for success orientations, so if you teach your girl scouts success orientations they can earn awards. My second reason was helping with community services and show care. One of the school goals for the MSA accreditation is to help with community services. You live in earth; community services can help Atyrau. As you see plastic is invading our wonderful home, earth. You probably want to stop that, so you can teach girls to care about the community by helping recycle plastic and other things. So, by being a girl scout leader; you can help with this with the girl scouts. The last reason I said was to make friends. If you be a girl scout leader you can help you daughter make new friends older and younger. If your daughter is having problems with making friends, make them join girl scouts and if you are a girl scout leader you can help her. I know you are probably thinking your too busy. Well, that is a problem, but you can train you daughter to help with chores, so you can have more time. I think this will work. Maybe you can teach your child to babysit if you have a younger child. I hope you will consider, because you’ll have more time with daughter and she’ll become a better woman in the future and help the community. We need you to volunteer. Without a girl scout leader, we can’t have girl scouts. A Chemistry Comparisonby a Secondary II StudentUpon the discovery of subatomic particles, scientists questioned the structure of the atom. Among many, there are five basic models which have tried to depict the structure and which have contributed to modern knowledge of it. Due to technology constantly evolving, observing the atom has become easier over the course of time. The following models attempt to explain the structure, and progression can be seen over time. John Dalton’s “Billiard Ball” (or Solid Sphere) model was the first ever proposed atomic model developed in 1803. Dalton believed that the atom was indivisible, which is where the word, “atom,” originates - the Greek word, “atomos,” meaning indivisible. The model portrayed the atom to be a solid spherical shape, and Dalton further theorized that all atoms of a given element are identical, that compounds are combinations of different kinds of atoms, and that atoms can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. His model was beneficial in the way that he recognized that atoms of an element are different from other elements, although the major flaw in his theory was that atoms were indivisible. The discovery of electrons led to the creation of the following significant model - J.J. Thomson's “Plum Pudding” model, created in 1904. The Plum Pudding model represented the atom as a spherical shape having a positive charge, with negatively charged electrons flowing randomly throughout it. Prior to this model, scientists had known of the presence of a positive charge in the atom, although they did not know the source of this charge. Thomson’s explanation was that the atom had a positively charged medium. The name was given due to the atom’s empty space being the pudding, and the negatively charged electrons within the atom being plums. This model was significant, due to the recognition of electrons as being part of atoms, though the major flaw was that the explanation for the positive charge was incorrect. Ernest Rutherford’s model, created in 1911, was very different from what was thought of as the ordinary model. Rutherford was also the first to explain the positive charge in an atom - the nucleus. Positioned in the center, the nucleus would act as the positive charge and electrons would orbit it, much like planets around the sun. The experiment that led to this discovery was Rutherford firing a beam of positively charged alpha particles through a sheet of gold. Some beams passed through while others were deflected. This was only possible if the majority of the atom was empty space. Rutherford’s model was significant because it was the explanation for the positive charge of an atom. However, a major flaw was a lack in explanation for electrons orbiting the nucleus. Niels Bohr elaborated on Rutherford’s model. The major change in Bohr’s model was that he proposed that electrons orbited the nucleus in fixed sizes and energies. Electrons in this model could not occupy energy between the fixed energy levels. This model was significant because it proposed stable orbits of electrons, and explained the emission spectra of some elements. The final model - Erwin Schrodinger, Heisenberg, and others - the “Quantum Model,” proposed that electrons do not move around the nucleus in set patterns. Instead, they moved in waves. Due to it being impossible to locate the exact location of an electron, they developed a “cloud of probability,” an area in which electrons could move freely about while inside. This model was significant because it described movement patterns of electrons and it is still considered the most accurate model of the atom to this day. In conclusion, due to the studies performed by various scientists, knowledge of the atom has increased significantly. Stuck In A Sandstorm (Part 1)by Secondary I StudentRemember when you were 8 years old? Imagine being stuck in a sandstorm at that age. Yep, I can imagine. I have been, and I wasn't alone. My best friend Berend and I were playing outside. We wanted to go inside, but Berend and I still hadn’t finished our mission. No, we weren’t hired by any agents. We were the agents, and we had our own mission. I had to go sneak through the jungle in the playground. From there, I had to sneak into the gym with my partner Berend. We had to reach our final destination: The Gym. We hadn’t gone there successfully without being caught. Just kidding, we have; but we pretended that we hadn’t. Berend and I were the best of friends and we had the wildest imaginations. We would pretend all the time and it was extremely fun. Little 8 year old me was too focused on these things, so I didn’t realize that the parents were taking their children inside. At the time, it didn’t matter to me. We looked at the sign, saying: “Fitness; Gym Times: 9:00 AM-8:00 PM, Every Saturday and Sunday.” It was in Russian, but I could read it since I had classes in school. “Darn it,” Berend said. “What do we do now?” I asked. “I guess we could go to my house and play on my Xbox.” “Yeah, I mean, it is getting quite windy.” “Let’s race to the tennis court.” We rushed over to the tennis court near the parking lot. I looked at the court and ran. “Last one there is a rotten egg!” I said. Yeah, it makes absolutely no sense now that you think about it; but we have all said that phrase at some point in our lives. We sprinted to the tennis court, both determined. Twenty meters away from the tennis court gate, it was getting intense. We were right next to each other, running at full speed. We both turned left heading for the gate. I looked next to me, and he was right there. Five steps left. BAM! We both passed through the gate and noticed that Berend passed through it before me. I lost, and was titled “The Rotten Egg.” “YEAAAAAAH! WOOOHOOO! I am NOT the rotten egg!” “Berend…” “What?” “ I feel quite bored.” “Me too, wanna go to my house and play on my Xbox?” “Ok.” I was walking down to his house. The neighborhood was silent. I couldn’t hear anything; not a single sound. “Jeez, it’s so quiet.” “Yeah you are right,” I agreed. “Look! Over there! My mom is planting something, let’s go check it out!” We ran towards his house to check out what his mom was doing. A strong wind hit us as we were moving. It was blowing us both backwards. We sprinted full speed towards his house, trying to get out of this strong wind. His mom looked at us and signaled to come quick. Parents started coming out of their house to grab their children. They started screaming the names of their kids, and all their kids rushed from the playground into their homes. “This seems serious Berend.” He couldn’t hear me through this strong wind. I started running and he followed. His house was too far so we turned around, and went to the gym, which was close by. We rushed and pulled on the door handle. “PULL HARDER!” I shouted. Sand was in the air, and little grains were hitting our faces. … to be continued. Anne of Green Gablesa Literary Analysis by an 11yo student, Illustrations by two other 11yo studentsAnne of Green Gables is all about a skinny, redheaded, freckled, smart, imaginative, talkative orphan. Anne has had a series of moves to different families until she gets to the Cuthbert's. In the Cuthbert's house lived a brother and a sister who both never got married. One day the Cuthbert's were expecting a boy from the orphanage; little did they know that Anne was the one to come. Through a series of events Anne has not only gained a home but, acceptance, friendship, and ultimately love and belonging. When Mathew went to pick her up from the train station, he couldn’t bear to tell Anne that there had been a mistake. On the chatty ride home, he fell in love with Anne. The next morning Marilla took Anne back to see Mrs. Spencer. Mrs. Blewit with ten kids wanted to take Anne. It hurt Marilla to leave Anne with someone else who would treat her like garbage. “No” she said she couldn’t do it. That evening when they were back home, Marilla and Mathew had a talk, they decided they were to keep Anne, but they were not to tell her until the next day. “Oh, please Miss Cuthbert, won't you tell me if you are going to send me away or not? I've tried to be patient all morning, but I really feel that I cannot bear not knowing any longer” (pg60). “Well”, said Marilla unable to find any excuse for deferring her explanation any longer, “I suppose I might as well tell you. Mathew and I have decided to keep you, that is if you will try to be a good little girl and show yourself grateful” (pg. 60-61) Anne started to cry, she was so happy. That was a very great day for all of them, Anne did not stop talking for one minute. This is when Anne started to finally feel acceptance and belonging. Even though she had started to feel acceptance and belonging with Mathew and Marilla because of her temper she had a more difficult time with others. The first interaction with Mrs. Lynde and Anne was not the best. Mrs. Lynde is a very honest person she always says what's on her mind. “You are ugly, skinny, red headed girl you are so ugly.” Anne was so mad she also yelled at Mrs. Lynde calling her a fat..... Marilla was so very surprised at both at them because Mrs. Lynde has to get used to Anne and, Anne needs to keep her temper down, and not be so sensitive. Anne was persuaded by Mathew to apologize and smooth things over so she could stay. Not only did she find belonging with Mathew, Marilla, and Mrs. Lynde began to really like her. The best thing ever was to meet the neighbor girl Diana and become bosom friends. She was excited, they were going to be friends forever. Not only did she get to meet her bosom friend, but it had been the first time Anne got to school. Everything was going great at school until Gilbert pulled Anne's hair and called her “carrots” Anne was so furious, her temper got the best of her again, she yelled at him and broke a slate over his head. Anne got in big trouble and had to sit next to Gilbert the whole day. Gilbert was so sorry and apologized. Everyone was very surprised, because he never apologized. Anne insisted to Marilla and told her she would never talk to Gilbert ever or, apologize. After days, months, and years of happiness in Green Gables Anne was going to be a teacher which had been her dream, she was going to go Carmody. Out of nowhere something tragic had happened. Mathew died of a heart attack. Anne had lost the person who had loved her most...... This was a very hard time for the Cuthbert's. So many things had been going on, Anne had to study so much, she was about to become a teacher. Marilla was getting old and couldn't do it all by herself. Anne had to make such a big decision; either become a teacher or stay home and help take care of Marilla. Not only was Anne having a hard time buy they were going broke and Marilla was going blind. Anne made her choice, she was going to stay home and help. Anne knew all the sacrifices that Mathew and Marilla had made for her, and now she was making a sacrifice for the one she loved to keep Green Gables. That had showed ultimate love and belonging. Then Anne finds out from Mrs. Lynde that Gilbert was going to give up his teaching position in Avonlea for her. Anne was so surprised, why would Gilbert do something so nice for her? Anne really got to know that Gilbert loves and respects her. Anne loved her job, she could have never been happier. They were all very happy with the decision Anne had made. Marilla was getting better, and Gilbert and Anne were getting along great. The book, in my opinion, was that it was great. Anne was the perfect character she was so imaginative and always was positive. Anne was the chattiest girl and made Anne of Green Gables so much more beautiful. Even though not everyone showed it, everyone in the inside loved her. This was one of my favorite books.
