Deacon Vascov talks to students about EECM

During the most recent Student Council meeting, Deacon John Vaskov of Sacred Heart Parish spoke to students about his involvement with the East End Cooperative Ministries (EECM). As many of you know, the Student Council sponsors monthly collections for the EECM. The EECM is a local ministry that includes 45 congregations in the Pittsburgh area. Sacred Heart is the only one that promotes student involvement in the collection of food donations.

Deacon Vaskov explained how the donations help the less fortunate in our area. The donations help to feed 600 families each month. Last year, 25,000 meals were served at the EECM facility, and 43,000 meals were delivered to shut-ins and the elderly.

Food products aren’t the only items needed at the EECM. A recent collection of winter outerwear yielded 800 coats that were distributed to community residents to help them keep warm this winter. Deacon Vaskov also mentioned that the EECM provides tutors for approximately 50 students per week.

As you can see, the EECM provides many services within our community and is grateful for our support. Your donations are really making a difference in the lives of many people! So keep those donations coming, and thank you in advance for your generosity.

Sarris Easter Candy Sale

The SHES Annual Sarris Easter Candy Sale kicked off on January 20 and forms were sent home. Profits from the sale help to support many of the PTG sponsored activities held throughout the year so we encourage children to sell to family, friends and neighbors. Final turn in date is February 17.

Please take advantage of the new online ordering for out-of-town family and friends. Online orders will be shipped directly to the customer so there is no need to worry about deliveries or collecting money. Pick-up for paper orders will be on Wednesday, March 18 in the lower level of the Monsignor Keane Activities Building (gym) between 2 and 6 p.m.

Thank you for school supply donations!

We would like to thank all of the students, parents and staff who participated in the backpack and school supplies drive for Acculturation for Justice, Access, and Peace Outreach (AJAPO) this past month—it was a huge success!

AJAPO is a refugee resettlement organization that helps families acclimate to their new lives in the United States. Services range from setting up housing, helping with social security, employment, medical appointments, cultural orientation, ESL classes, school enrollment for children and more. In the past two months families from 6 countries have arrived with a total of 19 kids enrolled in school. Your donations have allowed children to start school on the right foot with the tools they need to perform well in classes.
