No Images? Click here Good developments and new challengesThis is the last IMAU newsletter of a successful academic year. Last month the international committee that evaluated the research performance of IMAU and the other institutes of our department for the period 2010-2015 issued their report, and praised the stable high performance level of our institute. In April I started at IMAU as professor by special appointment on the topic of ‘Air quality and climate interactions’. With this appointment I want to create a link between the fundamental research at IMAU and the societal and policy applications at RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment). NWO has awarded IMAU researcher Bert Wouters a Vidi grant worth 800,000 eurosGlaciers and ice caps have been responsible for a substantial part of sea-level rise in the past century, exceeding the contributions of Greenland and Antarctic ice. The research team will use satellite observations to map their present-day ice loss with an unprecedented accuracy and resolution, and unravel the driving processes. The grant enables him to develop his own innovative line of research and set up his own research group. Inaugural lecture Sybren DrijfhoutNot a prophet of doom, but discoverer of second chances. The conference will deal with interactions between rising temperatures, associated rising sea level, coastal impacts and adaptation scenarios. 42 degrees SouthWe are very interested in the careers of our former PhD students. In this edition Aimée Slangen tells us about the choices she made. 'My first visit to IMAU was in August 2008, to apply for a PhD position with Roderik van de Wal and Bert Vermeersen.'
