Trade Compliance Joins ORP

The Office of Trade Compliance (OTC) formally joined the Office of Research Protections last month. Trade Compliance provides hands-on assistance to the University community for compliance with US trade regulations. The natural synergy between Trade Compliance and ORP will lead to successful outcomes for investigators.

“This move positions our office to directly assist multiple ORP offices that oversee disclosure processes vital to the manage-ment of foreign influence risk," says Allen DiPalma, director of OTC. "Overall, this move will enable OTC to be even more effective moving forward."

Denise Capozzi Retires

Denise Capozzi, Director of Animal Research Protections and Education Compliance, will retire at the end of the month after a long and illustrious career at Pitt. In her current role, which she assumed in 2004, Denise serves as vice chair on the IACUC, manages the daily operations of the program, and serves on the biohazard committee.

Denise joined Pitt in the late 70’s after obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University. Denise worked for two years in the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) before earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania.

Upon graduating in 1986, Denise returned to Pitt in DLAR as lab animal veterinarian. In her 18 years in that role, she managed the clinical care of numerous species of animals. She served on the IACUC, trained veterinary technicians, and became a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DACLAM).

“For many years, Denise has been an invaluable resource to PITT,” says Vice Chancellor for Research Protections Bill Yates. “She will be sorely missed.”

New Single IRB Fee Budget Announced

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as the signatory agencies of the Common Rule, require the use of a single IRB (sIRB) of record for multi-site research. NIH issued a policy
permitting the institution that is acting as IRB of Record on an sIRB project to charge the relying sites for their services. While there is not a similar
policy for the signatory agencies of the Common Rule, the Pitt IRB can serve as the sIRB of record for these studies provided that the IRB review service for external sites is supported through a grant or departmental funds. For additional information about the process for requesting to serve as IRB of Record, visit the following link:

Contact the Human Research Protection Reliance Team at least 4 weeks in advance of the grant submission deadline to ensure that an appropriate budget is provided.
