Australian Physical Activity Guidelines for Children and Young People
Federal Minister for Sport, Senator Bridget McKenzie, launched the new 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for 5–17 year olds in April 2019.
The Guidelines recommend:
-
accumulating 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day
-
limiting sedentary recreational screen time to no more than two hours per day
-
ensuring 9–11 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night for students aged between five and 13 years, and 8–10 hours per night for those aged between 14 and 17 years.
Are our students/families following these important guidelines?

Thank you to all the classes for contributing to the Caritas Project Compassion Appeal this year. We successfully raised $388 dollars to forward onto Caritas. This money will be put to good use helping less fortunate and poorer communities.
Sunday, the 26th May, marked the beginning of National Reconciliation Week.
National Reconciliation Week is held every year from 27th May to 3rd June. The aim of Reconciliation Week is to raise awareness of the issues aboriginal people face, celebrate Indigenous cultures and histories, and recognise the achievements and contributions of Indigenous people in all areas of society.
The theme of this year’s Reconciliation Week is ‘Grounded in Truth, Walk Together in Courage’.
This year we are again going to help the St Vincent de Paul Society- also known as Vinnies.
We are going to seek donations of CLEAN blankets, doonas and COATS FOR KIDS.
If you have any of these things lying around at home wanting a good home to go to, then we are the place to send it to.
There will be a box placed in the foyer near the hall where you can drop these goods off. Please send these along CLEAN AND FOLDED.
They will then be collected by Vinnies who will distribute them to communities in Collingwood and the immediate surrounding areas.
Please support this FANTASTIC and simple way of helping others less fortunate than ourselves and it doesn’t have to cost you a cent!
Congratulations to Maya C, Max, Tilda, Maya M, Jesse, Jessica, Chloe, Lucas, Erin and Tess who celebrated their First Eucharist on the weekend.
We have the last of the candidates celebrating their First Eucharist this coming weekend. Please keep Ben, Hamish, Freya, and Anastasia in your prayers.

Overchoice- a first world problem
We live in a time when we have the world at our fingertips. We have choices. So many TV channels, so many websites, so many types of cheese at the shop, different varieties of pet, many different leisure pursuits on offer. However, this is not always a great thing. We can get lost in the array of choices open to us. “The fact that some choice is good, doesn’t necessarily mean that more choice is better” (Schwartz & Ward 2004). Often at times, we can feel a sense of overwhelm at the large number of decisions that require our attention and energy.
An overload of choices actually results in a rapid reduction of choices made. We tend to get ‘paralysis by analysis’. In this case, we use all of our decision making power in so many little decisions – when, to be honest, there are more important things in the world than which type of paper I would like to print on this week. This “first-world” problem is called overchoice.
The best remedy for overchoice is to be a ‘satisficer’, rather than a ‘maximiser’.
A satisficer is a person who just needs to get what is good enough for their requirements. They consider options until they find what meets their minimum criteria and then they select that option.
Maximisers on the other hand, are those who need to get absolutely the best deal and so look at all possible options.
Choice overload is a problem for maximisers who want to go to the best school, get the best job, have the best car and wear the best clothes. As more options become available, they need to work harder to exhaust all the possibilities” (Boniwell 2012). Maximisation is negatively associated with happiness, optimism, satisfaction with life and high self-esteem, while it is positively correlated with regret, perfectionism, depression and comparing ourselves with people who have more than us.
So what can we do about it?
Barry Schwartz (2004) offers the following ideas in his book entitled ‘The Paradox of Choice – Why more is less’:
Know when it is okay to accept ‘good enough’
Avoid social comparisons – set our own standards and don’t try ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ (which is increasingly difficult in the age of social media where most people show only the parts of their lives that they wish to share)
Be grateful for what we have
Learn to love our constraints (e.g. job, children, etc) because these things actually reduce the number of choices available to us
Create rules for certain things in our lives so that we can limit our decision making energy
Doing these things helps us embrace the notion of being satisfied with our lives as they are now. We can increase our awareness of ‘JOMO’ (joy of missing out) and let go of ‘FOMO’ (fear of missing out). Doing so will aid us in building our positive emotions.

Cellar Door Raffle
In previous years the Cellar Door Raffle has been a very important source of fundraising at the Dinner Dance.
We would like to continue the tradition this year and are seeking for families to donate a bottle of wine, spirits or beer. We ask that you choose something that you would enjoy drinking yourself! All blends and varieties are welcome.
If you are able to donate a bottle of your favourite drop, please deliver it to the School Office.
For those who, like me, are incredibly time poor or rarely visit the School Office, we've included Donate Now buttons via this link to make it easier. The Committee would be happy to purchase a bottle or two on your behalf.

We thank you for your continued generosity in supporting our wonderful school

Earn and Learn
The Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion is with us again and St Anne’s is participating. Start, collecting your stickers for every $10 you spend at Woolworths supermarket and place them on the Sticker Sheets available at Woolworths stores and the school office. A collection box is being organised at Woolworths, Kew and at the school office. The more stickers we collect, the more educational resources we can be earnt for the school. The promotion continues until the 25th June 2019, so get down to Woolies for your groceries and don’t forget to collect your stickers whenever you and your family are doing your weekly shop . We appreciate your assistance.
