Director's Message

Dear HDR Students,

It’s great seeing our Campus so busy this week – who would have thought that we would be able to have a face-to-face Orientation Week (O Week)? A lot of the activities and offerings are targeting undergrad and postgrad coursework students, but I encourage you to come along. There are many services provided for ALL students and they are worth checking out, such as Adelaide University Sport “Come and Try Social Sport” day (26 Feb).

With all the controversy around Facebook in recent days we are very glad that we chose Twitter to share news, information and achievements of our HDRs. If you haven’t done so already, get yourself a Twitter handle to engage with the scientific community worldwide. And while you are there, don’t hesitate to follow us @GradCentreUofA.

To all Postgrad Associations out there, we’d love to engage more with you, but also share and advertise your events and activities (if you don’t mind). Unfortunately, we don’t even know how many Postgrad Associations we have and who to contact. If you could reach out to us at graduate.centre@adelaide.edu.au, we can compile a list and start communications.

Please don’t forget our informal virtual HDR catch-ups every second Friday, 12pm – 12:30pm. The next meeting is scheduled for this Friday 26th February. Watch out for the zoom link which we will send to your email shortly before.

Enjoy Adelaide’s Festival Season,
Doreen

Tip of the Month

Australian Higher Education Graduate Statement (AHEGS)

Before the final thesis is submitted, all HDR students need to prepare and submit their 100-word Australian Higher Education Graduate Statement (AHEGS) to the Graduate Centre. Did you know, however, that this first needs to be approved by your supervisor?

When you have completed your 100 words on the AHEGS template you should email it to your principal supervisor and request their approval by return email.  Once you have your principal supervisor’s approval send that email - along with the approved AHEGS template attached - to the Graduate Centre via email.

2021 Research Student Handbook

The 2021 Research Student Handbook is now available on the AGC website! This year the Handbook has been optimised for online viewing allowing you to find the information you need more easily via the clickable contents page or through a keyword search with the find function. Printed copies of the Handbook will no longer be produced, resulting in a very significant reduction in paper use.

Whilst the online Handbook may be printed for personal use, we strongly encourage you to consult the Handbook online.  Think green, read on the screen.

2021 CaRST Handbook

The CaRST Handbook has been updated for 2021 and includes everything you need to know about engaging with the CaRST program, including a step-by-step guide and a catalogue of workshops categorised by domain and candidature stage. Download the guide.

Postgraduate Scholarship Opportunities

The Adelaide Graduate Centre maintains a searchable database of available scholarship opportunities (both full scholarships and supplementary scholarships), funded by both the University of Adelaide and external funding bodies. While the majority of available scholarships are awarded as part of the standard admission and scholarship rounds for domestic and international students, some are awarded at different times throughout the year, and may have a separate application process.

Visit the Postgraduate Scholarships website regularly for up to date information on current scholarship opportunities.

University Library

Are you undertaking systematic searching, or need help in advanced searching techniques? The library has a range of guides to assist you in finding resources for your research. Use library resources to:

  • Find guides to assist you with systematic searching, which is a key component in the systematic review process.
  • Explore interactive content demonstrating searching techniques in a number of popular databases in our 'How Do I' guides.
  • Develop your advanced database searching skills by accessing new self-guided courses. Advanced Library Essentials are available for you to enrol in Allied Health, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Psychology and Public Health

Get involved with the University Library!

The Library Student Advisory Committee has been established to create a forum for students and library staff to engage in a two-way discussion. We are now inviting interest from HDR student volunteers who would like to join the Committee. This is your chance to give feedback on the physical and virtual University Library and the services we offer, as well as explore and co-create new initiatives.  It is also an opportunity to engage with students from other disciplines and campuses. The Committee will meet twice a year. The meeting dates for 2021 are:

  • 24 March from 2-4pm
  • 18 August, 2-4pm

Afternoon Tea will be provided.

If you are interested, please contact the library at library@adelaide.edu.au and include Library Student Advisory Committee in the subject line.
