Rio Hosts SHINE at Headquarters

The Rio Tinto Communities Team and Women’s Network hosted Midwest SHINE students while in Perth on their annual camp in late 2015.

The visit to the company's Central Park headquarters included a ‘speed dating’ style networking session with a diverse range of female employees who offered advice and inspiration to the girls about life and potential careers after school.

Students also received a behind the scenes tour of the State Theatre Centre as part of the company’s partnership with Black Swan State Theatre Company.

Rio Tinto's association with SHINE dates back to 2014 when the company joined forces with Geraldton Senior High School, John Wilcox College and other industry partners to support the program which provides life skills and advice for education and career development in young women aged 13 to 15 years of age.

SHINE has been recognised as a positive contributor to social inclusion and Indigenous development with plans and funding underway to expand the program in other locations around the state.

Karara Supports Bowling in Morowa

Karara Mining has reaffirmed its commitment to the North Midlands community by announcing the successful Karara Community Farm lease applicant for 2016.

The farm is an agricultural resource for community groups to utilise to generate their own profits as an alternative means of fundraising.

Karara has awarded the lease to past recipients, the Morowa Bowling and Golf Club which will undertake substantial green remediation works and boost its funding efforts through a planned harvest at the 600ha community farm owned by Karara.

In 2012 the Club raised $68,000 from its harvest at the farm to fund a renewable energy solar system to reduce ongoing power costs.

Iluka Congratulates Apprenticeship Completion

The Iluka Resources Narngulu Operations Team congratulates Isaac Shiosaki for the successful completion of his trade certificate.

Isaac is the first apprentice at the Midwest processing plant to complete his trade certificate through a partnership program operated by Iluka in conjunction with the Clontarf Foundation.

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects for young Aboriginal men through placement in school based academies.  Iluka has been in partnership with Clontarf in the Midwest since 2003.

Isaac was employed through ATC Midwest and hosted by the Narngulu team while he completed his Certificate III in Metal Fabrication.

Prior to completing his apprenticeship, Isaac successfully graduated year 12 and participated in Clontarf’s Midwest Academy.
