Welcome to Issue 04 of Habitat 2014

Census Date: Monday 31 March

The Census Date on Monday 31 March is the last day to withdraw from standard Semester 1 subjects, take leave of absence or withdraw from your course without incurring a 'Withdrawn' grade on your academic record and fee liability.

International students

International students on student visas are expected to complete their course by the course end date on their Confirmation of Enrolment (COE). Usually this means a standard load of 50 points per semester.

You can only reduce your load in limited circumstances and an application is required. Further information about your visa and reducing your study load is available from International Student Services.

Local students

Local students do not need to apply to reduce their study load. Please note that dropping your study load to part-time study may affect Centrelink or scholarship benefits and eligibility for public transport concession.

Withdrawing from a subject may impact your progression in and duration of your course. Use the Handbook to check whether the subject you are considering withdrawing from is a prerequisite for subjects you intend to take in future or a corequisite for any subjects in your current enrolment. You can make an appointment with a student adviser if you would like to discuss your course plan.

Further information about managing your enrolment including how to withdraw from subjects is available on the Amending your Study Plan web page.

Expanding urban populations mean that cities have less green space, poor air quality, high energy use, low water quality, potential flooding and warmer temperatures through the urban heat island effect. Increasing the amount of vegetation in cities through green infrastructure technologies such as green walls and roofs and the urban forest can significantly address many of these issues and improve liveability.

The Living City showcases the University of Melbourne’s leading research into green infrastructure and demonstrates how different green infrastructure technologies can be integrated to maximise vegetation cover and their environmental and social benefits.

Come see it for yourself at the 2014 Melbourne International Flower and Garden show!

Sustainable Energy Solutions

Date: Tuesday 8 April
Time: 6.00pm - 7.00pm
Venue: Theatre 1, 207 Bouverie Street
RSVP: Book through Eventbrite

Prof Mark Diesendorf (UNSW) presents his research on integrating large scale renewable energy into electricity supply-demand systems.

He finds that Australia, several other countries and possibly the whole world could transition to electricity systems that are entirely renewable and are based on commercially available technologies. Most urban transport and heat could also be supplied by renewable electricity. For Australia, the UNSW research group finds that the transition is affordable and is likely to be the least expensive of future low carbon scenarios. Myths, that are being disseminated by sustainable energy deniers, have been busted.

Tower Tower Exhibition

Dates: Wednesday 19 March - Thursday 3 April
Venue: Wunderlich Gallery, 757 Swanston

Ah but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for? -- Robert Browning, Andrea del Sarto, 1855.

The tower is an ever-present and iconic feature of the increasingly urbanised lives of the human race. Its soaring form has captured the human imagination from a symbol of striving idealism to human greed, pomposity, excess and the vapid one liner.

As Melbourne’s skyline reaches ever higher the work showcased in this exhibition, by students of Studio B of the Master of Architecture program, is a timely interrogation of what the tower typology means to this city.

Master of Architecture Studio B -was led by M.Arch Program Coordinator, Peter Raisbeck and tutors, Kirilly Barnett, Madeleine Beech and Ben de Nardi
