Epiphany celebration at school

The Feast of the Epiphany, or the Three Magi, was to be celebrated at school on January 6, with Fr. Grecco and Fr. Steve blessing our classrooms, children, and staff. The blessing will be rescheduled due to the two-hour delay.

The custom in Germany is a childrens' festival from January 1 to January 6 (Three Kings Day). After a service at church, the children go from house to house to gather offerings for poor children in poor countries. They are dressed as the three kings and carry sticks with stars on the top. At the homes they sing songs and recite messages of Christmas. At each house they paint the letters "20+CMB+15," which stand for the Latin Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Christ bless this house). At the same time, the letters are the first letters of the names of the wise men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.

We imitate this tradition by having the children gather in the halls and sing carols while the priests move from room to room blessing us and the spaces we use daily.

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week will be from Sunday, January 25 through Saturday, January 31. The national theme for 2015 is "Catholic Schools—Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service"

We invite all families to attend the 9:30 a.m. Parish Mass that Sunday to celebrate the many gifts God has given to Sacred Heart School, our parishioners, parents, children, and teachers.

The Mass will be followed by a festive family brunch in the cafeteria. The registration form in the monthly envelope is due on Friday, January 16.

As is tradition, parents can also join their children (preschool to grade 5) for breakfast in the cafeteria during Catholic Schools Week. The reservation form in the monthly envelope includes times and dates by grade. Please return it by Tuesday, January 20.

A hard copy for events scheduled for the week is included in the monthly envelope.

As the Parent and Teacher Association, we wanted to keep you up to date and informed about our finances. First, we cannot thank you enough for all of your efforts.

The following is a brief summary of our efforts and the resulting money raised as of December 2014.

We also have a few fundraisers remaining including the Easter Candy Sale, The Second Time Chic Clothing Sale, the Spring Flower Mother’s Day Sale, and Kennywood Ticket Sales.  Please consider participating as a volunteer or a purchaser. You may want to invite friends, family and co-workers to participate in any or all of our efforts.

Second Time Chic Fashion Sale

Please help in this new and exciting opportunity to fundraise for our school.  We are collecting donations of gently used and high-end men'a, women'a, and children’s clothing, purses, accessories, and sports items.  Now that the holidays have wrapped up, consider sorting through your wardrobe and setting aside donations.

Please also help us by spreading the word to increase donations.  This event will be held in the school auditorium Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 8. Donation drop off and sale setup dates will be February 28 through March 5. Volunteers will be treated to a “shop early” event on Thursday, March 5.

January food: Rice-A-Roni

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect Rice-A-Roni to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
