2. The Pirbright Institute linked with the Phillippines for African swine fever control measures

The Animal Disease Diagnosis and Reference Laboratory in the Philippines, one of the countries hardest hit by ASF with the loss of 3 million pigs, is collaborating with the Pirbright OIE reference laboratory to build testing capacity and expertise.

3. E. coli outbreak linked to organic yoghurt grows to 17 cases

Another person has been confirmed infected in an E. Coli O157 outbreak linked to organic yogurt from Pure Eire Dairy in Washington state.

4.  Too early to say why foodborne infection numbers have fallen during the pandemic

The Food Standards Agency’s chief scientific advisor has said potential trends in foodborne infections must be monitored after a decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from the past 12 months shows a substantial drop in disease rates, but this is likely because of fewer patients going to general practioners’ offices, and reduced diagnostic testing.

6. Toxoplasma gondii the highest food and waterborne pathogen risk in Norway

The Norwegian pathogen risk ranking takes account of the number of water and foodborne illnesses, severity of acute and chronic disease, fraction of chronic illness, fatality rate, and the potential for increased disease burden.

7. Media reports of hundreds sick in Japan with school lunch milk under investigation

Hundreds of people, mostly children, have been sickened in what officials believe is a foodborne outbreak in the city of Toyama, Japan. The cause of the outbreak has yet to be reported.
