It's winter, but you can still play & enjoy bowls! Did you miss our last issue of our Friday Flash... IT'S HOW WE ROLL...Matariki... Matariki is both the name of the Pleiades star cluster and also of the season of its first rising in late June or early July. This is a marker of the beginning of the Māori new year. Different people celebrate Matariki at different times; some when Matariki rises in late June or early July while others observe it at the first full moon or first new moon following the rising of Matariki. Matariki is a time to come together with whānau and friends, prepare and plan for the year ahead; to share and celebrate with food, and entertainment. There are lots of activities happening across NZ in celebration of Matariki - here is what's on in Auckland. 2021 awards luncheon A room full of smiles and light-heartedness at last Sunday's 2021 Awards Luncheon wasn't hard to miss. After a year's hiatus, the awards were back! MC Stephen McIvor worked with the audience as the 2020-2021 season winners approached the stage to be presented with their trophies. It wasn't just the larger clubs claiming the prizes, the smaller clubs such as Grey Lynn, Mangere, Balmoral and Otahuhu Railway were taking their share too and making history. Like Darral Gordon from Otahuhu Railway, winning the Ryman Healthcare Auckland Championship Singles title, the club's first title winner in 33 years. Another great year of winners! Thank you to everyone who came along, congratulations to all the winners - it was a wonderful day celebrating success and having some fun. Help needed... Auckland Bowls is about to embark on a small project... to catalogue all of our trophies. The catalogue will become our record of the cups and their winners. Once complete, we will make the catalogue available online. Is anyone interested in assisting us with this project at our Auckland office? So if you have some free time on Tuesday 6 July or Tuesday 13 July, and looking for something to do, please give Lauren a call on 09 623 3555, she'll fill you in with all the details. 1-5 Year winter coaching ABCA coaching has been up and running for the last couple of weeks, with more than 160 players completing the course so far. It doesn't matter which club you belong to, you can get coaching at any zone that's convenient for you. Just a reminder 1-5's, if you want to play in the Canoe & Campi or ABCA Cups in August, you need to have to complete winter coaching. Rangatahi means younger generation or youth.
