Click here The school has been attracting new enrolments to our face to face school during the year and distance education enrolments have increased this year and continue to be received regularly. Enrolments for Year 7 2020 are now being processed and Round 2 finished on Wednesday. I would encourage any families who have expressed an interest in attending Camden Haven High School to complete the enrolment forms and get them to the school for processing. Our anticipated enrolment for 2020 is due to be submitted on Wednesday 1st August and it is vital that we have accurate figures as this affects our teaching entitlement and also the number of classes we are able to staff in each year cohort. During this week students in Year 10 have been able to attend taster “lessons” to give them some idea of what subjects being offered for them to study in Year 11 2020, and what they look like in the classroom. This has been able to improve their understanding of some of the subjects in which they have an interest. An information evening for parents and students will be held in week two, Thursday 1st August next term. Students will receive a note, early in term 3, which will outline the format of the evening. Students in Year 8 will also be receiving information on their subject choices, so please be aware that there will be lots of information coming out and important decisions to be made for students in both these cohorts. Term 2 continues to be a busy and very successful one for our school. The Transition Program for Year 6 students is continuing and positive feedback has been received from the staff and students at the primary schools at the many and varied opportunities available for students at our school. The Southern Districts Dance Festival is being held this week, with matinee and evening performances. This will be a fantastic showcase of the talented students from the Hastings and the Macleay. The finale on Thursday evening was a spectacular event, congratulations to all our students and staff who worked so hard to make this a successful event. Work Experience at Dubbo ZooLara was fortunate enough to secure a highly sought after week as an assistant at Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. This was a wonderful experience for Lara and a testament to her dedication to animal studies, and a stepping stone towards her dream of becoming a zoo keeper. Deciphering Codes for STEMThe STEM class have started their second project this term, launching into the world of secrets with a brand new unit on Cryptography. Working with a combination of physical and digital resources, students will learn about ancient, classical and modern ciphers, studying the ways in which information is enciphered (put into a code) and deciphered (made readable again) using increasingly more complicated keys. Industry experts will explain the use of cryptography in protecting our data online, an increasingly important problem to deal with as society moves more information around electronically than ever before in history. Just to keep our students on their toes outside of class, several mysterious documents in diabolical ciphers have been spotted in the library – what could they possibly say? Lawn Bowls Team Travels to State FinalsOur Lawn Bowls team travelled to Nambucca Heads to play the Final of the State High Schools Lawn Bowls competition. Evolution in ScienceIn Science, year 10 students are delving into the world of Evolution! Beginning with the important first step in the process of Natural selection – that there are differences within a population, 10M students measured themselves for Science, finding substantial variation in height and hand size. Erring on the side of caution, our use of students as a demonstration population was halted before we reached the next part of the natural selection process which states that not all members of a population survive! Distance Education Mini SchoolEvery year, selected Camden Haven High School Distance Education students are invited to meet for a three day event called Mini School Japanese Beginners Speaking DayOur Japanese Beginners students travelled to North Sydney for a speaking day to practice for the upcoming HSC Oral exams in Term 3. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet up with each other and also meet other students studying Japanese. They gained some valuable feedback from a variety of Japanese teachers on how to improve their conversation skills in Japanese by expanding their responses and incorporating a wide variety of language structures in their answers. Nikita, Magdalena and Jessica said even though they were all very nervous at the start of the session, it was great to get helpful feedback to guide their study and to know what to expect in their oral exams. On the whole it was an enjoyable experience. Thank you to Berryman Sensei for travelling down to Sydney to support our students.
