Under the leadership and guidance of Associate Professor Marjorie Valix, the USYD’s Materials and Mineral Processing Research Unit, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, is leading the CRCP Smart Lining for Wastewater Pipe and Infrastructure (Sub-project 2B).
Associate Professor Marjorie Valix and her team of researchers are conducting a range of experimental and analytical analyses to examine and document the key aspects around the coating performance as a corrosion barrier in wastewater pipes and infrastructures.
They are focussing on testing cement based coatings primarily geopolymers and calcium aluminate cement. Coatings are being tested both in the field and laboratory. As part of the field testing, the USYD researchers are also working with various utilities (Sydney Water, Icon Water, South East Water, Hunter Water, SA Water and Water Corporation) in understanding the long-term (> 3+ years) performance of various coatings.
A/Professor Valix and her team are actively working on setting up new accelerated corrosion test chambers in the USYD laboratory. These chambers will be used to conduct parallel laboratory-based tests to simulate corrosion in field applications. The USYD researchers will use these accelerated chambers to systematically understand the mechanisms of corrosion and coating functionalities (e.g., bacteriostatic effects, self-healing features) and their impact on coating performance.
