Please read below for MANY resources and events to help you in your prehealth journey! As you wrap up the semester, begin thinking of ways to enhance your candidacy as an applicant to professional programs. There are so many items below, be sure to take your time viewing them!

 

Fall 2020 Alternative Grading

Please be judicious in your decision to use alternative grades since this may impact your applications to professional schools, graduate schools, postbac programs, scholarships, and other academic pursuits. If you are unsure about whether to take an alternative grade for a course, please consult a prehealth adviser before making your decision.

 

DRAWING FOR KAPLAN COURSE SCHOLARSHIP

DEADLINE: DEC 31, 2020

WHAT: Kaplan’s MCAT, DAT, OAT, PCAT, and GRE programs*

Disclaimers: Not valid for Admissions Consulting, One-on-One tutoring packages, PLUS Programs, or Intensive Programs. Valid for new enrollments only. Cannot be applied retroactively. This certificate has no cash value and is non-transferable. Void if unauthorized or if transferred or sold without authorization. Scholarship cannot be combined with any other promotion or discount and is valued only for the selected option at the time of registration. May not be duplicated.

WHO: Penn State students or alumni planning to apply to the 2021-2022 application cycle for medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy or PA programs are invited to apply. One student/alumnus will be selected to receive this scholarship.

 Medical School Applicants: AAMC Fee Assistance Program

Applications for the AAMC Fee Assistance program close on December 17th. If you plan to use the FAP toward your 2021 MCAT registration you should apply now!

Now is the time to start looking at the AAMC Fee Assistance Program (FAP). AAMC has updated the income eligibility requirements to 400% or less of the 2019 national poverty level for that family size. Many students are eligible for this!!!

**You must have your parents tax information from 2019 in order to apply***

Benefits are NOT retroactive. You should submit your AAMC FAP before you register for your MCAT exam. 

Even if you plan to only apply to DO programs, you should still complete an AAMC FAP to receive the MCAT benefits.

  • The MCAT Official Prep products benefit package is subject to change. The current MCAT Official Prep products benefit is the MCAT Official Prep Online-Only Bundle ($268.80 value), which includes all online MCAT Official Prep products.

AMCAS Benefit

Waiver for all AMCAS fees for one (1) application submission with up to 20 medical school designations ($990 value), submitted by December 31, 2021.

ASPPH Presents Webinar: CDC Public Health Associate Program (PHAP)

The American Public Health Association is co-hosting a webinar for students about the CDC Public Health Associates Program on Wednesday, December 16, 3:00 - 4:00 pm ET  Register here: https://www.aspph.org/event/aspph-presents-webinar-cdc-public-health-associate-program-phap-2/ 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Public Health Associate Program (PHAP) is a two-year, hands-on training program with a mission to train and provide experiential learning to early-career public health professionals. Associates are assigned to state, tribal, local, territorial health agencies and nongovernmental organizations in one program focus area for the duration of the two-year training program. 

This webinar will provide an overview of PHAP and discuss the application process. PHAP will be accepting 2021 candidate applications January 20-27 via the USAJOBS website. If selected and matched to a host site, candidates will officially begin PHAP in October 2021.

Health Career Showcase

 

Health Career Showcase is an interprofessional pre-health conference organized by students from the University of Florida who have been working hard to make the event as incredible as possible amidst the pandemic.

This event is a full day event where students are able to meet and hear from representatives of medical schools, dental schools, and PA programs from around the world. We will be hosting student panels with current medical, dental, and PA students, small breakout sessions with individual schools, and a virtual tabling session. The entire event will be held on Zoom and is a great way to learn about the ins and outs of specific programs directly from the deans of admissions. You will learn about admission requirements, what programs are looking for in an applicant, the unique qualities of each program, and much more! Currently, 30 medical schools, 16 dental schools, and 20 PA programs are confirmed for the event.

Health Career Showcase will be held on Saturday February 6th, 2021 on Zoom! Attending this event is a great way to expand your horizons, get excited about applying to graduate school, and bolster your professional skills! Registration is now open!

National Hispanic Medical Association Pre-Health Conference

National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) will be hosting a virtual pre-health conference on Saturday, January 23, 2021, from 12 PM to 6 PM Eastern Time.  This event is open to all college students! We will focus on medicine, dentistry, nursing, MPH, and graduate science research.  Students will be able to hear from speakers, network with current health professional students and recruiters. NHMA is also working together to set up times for students to do mock interviews or get their personal statements be reviewed.

Pre-PA’s Path to Financial Health

Before and after acceptance to a PA program, PA students and pre-PAs are faced with financial choices that will impact their student life and the beginning of their professional career. NSURP now accepting applications

The Nemours Summer Undergraduate Research Program (NSURP) is accepting applications for funded Summer Research Scholar positions in our Summer 2021 program.  NSURP is a 10-week, full-time program that offers opportunities consisting of laboratory-based, translational, and clinical biomedical research projects. The available positions are located at three Nemours sites:

  •   A.I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. From the DE site, there are occasionally projects
      based at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.
  •   Nemours Children’s Specialty Care in Jacksonville, FL
  •   Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, FL

The location of each project is specified in the project abstracts, available in the link below.

Online applications: Accepted December 1, 2020 through January 15, 2021.  All letters of reference must be received by 11:59 PM EST on January 31, 2021 for consideration by the selection committee; applications lacking letters of reference after January 31st will be considered incomplete. 

Eligibility: Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students at the time of application, a US citizen or legal permanent resident, and have a college GPA of 3.2 or higher.  Applicants should also have interest in research, medicine, healthcare, science, public health, or related fields.

Program information: Program dates are June 1 through August 6, 2021. During the program, Nemours clinical and research faculty will guide students through the process of formulating and testing hypotheses, interpreting data, and communicating results, while working on active research projects.  Available projects vary each year. Training is provided on human subjects protection, animal welfare, responsible conduct of research, and research ethics.  Program activities include a student-focused seminar series, undergraduate-oriented journal club, and opportunities for shadowing (in-person program only) and engagement in other educational programs.  All students present their research project and findings to the community via poster sessions and oral presentations. Family and friends are invited to attend these events.

Pandemic fatigue is real. Americans are struggling with maintaining their mental health as the Coronavirus Pandemic persists and continues to affect daily lives. Despite the real fatigue that all of us are experiencing — from healthcare workers to working parents to senior citizens, teachers, and children — staying optimistic, hopeful, and understanding where to find resources to support mental health will be key to surviving the next several months.

Join the University of Vermont Robert Larner College of Medicine’s Jan Carney, MD, MPH; COVID Support VT’s Catherine Burns, Ph.D, and Michael Nilo, MD Candidate, for a free, informational webinar on Wednesday, December 16 at 4:00 p.m. ET, to discuss the effects that the pandemic has had on our mental health, resources, and strategies to help us manage while the pandemic persists.
