1. Seven sick in UK from Salmonella in liquid egg whites

Seven confirmed cases of Salmonella Enteritidis have been reported in the UK and one suspected infection is under investigation in Ireland. One batch of Dr. Zak’s Barn Farmed Liquid Egg White 970 ml from France with raw material from Spain was recalled on Sept. 17 followed by other batches on Sept. 21.

2. 2299 confirmed sick from Cyclospora in US from multiple outbreaks

The first outbreak, identified in June, was associated with prepackaged vegetable trays (containing broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots) sold at a convenience store chain and the second multistate outbreak, identified in July, was associated with salads (containing carrots, romaine, and other leafy greens) sold at a fast food chain.

3. UK disease detectives: Supermarket loyalty cards to trace an E coli outbreak

Supermarket loyalty cards were used to trace the source of a large E coli outbreak affecting mainly men in England in a project attempting to reduce foodborne illness and put the pieces together to find the source of the outbreak.

4. FSIS revises directive on common food allergens in meat

USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a revised directive to inspectors to emphasize the importance of verifying control of major allergens and to incorporate a shorter questionnaire.

7. Cronobacter: Not just for infants, 156 sick at senior high school in China

08.10.2018. China. Cronobacter

Case-control study including 70 case-patients and 295 controls indicated a strong association between eating supper at school canteen of the outbreak onset and foodborne gastroenteritis (AGE), as revealed by the Odds Ratio (OR: 95.32).
