Project Barcelona Building Update

The past few months have seen some very visible progress on the new building, with much of the structure now in place.

  • The names for many of the spaces within the building have been locked-in, with a distinctive New York theme. Names include Central Park and Times Square for the upper and lower atrium spaces, various Manhattan neighbourhoods in the co-working space, and The Highline for the space above the new cafe, including the connecting bridges.
  • Much of the concrete structure for the building is now in place. Window frames are beginning to be installed.
  • The roof is entirely in place now, and connected to the Gateway Building (Project Barcelona Stage 1).
  • Solar panels have been installed on the roof.
  • Acoustic absorbing panels in the ceiling have been installed, as well as other ceiling finishes.
  • In the centre of the atrium space, The Treehouse has taken shape. This section will include the cafe (lower floor) and co-working/learning spaces (upper floor), and the first of two connecting bridges is now clearly visible.
  • Concrete is about to be poured for the tiered-seating/staircase in the lower section of the building (Time Square).

It is a very exciting time seeing the different spaces take shape. More photos can be found on the Project Barcelona Instagram account.

HSC 2014

The 2014 HSC exams have begun, and will take place over the next few weeks. The first exam was yesterday, with English paper 1, and the exams will run until Wednesday 5 November.

We wish all Year 12 students the very best as they study and undertake their exams. We hope it is a rewarding time as they begin to transition to life after school. We look forward to celebrating with Year 12 at the Graduation and Formal on 11 November.

If parents are parking or walking near the MPC, please be conscious of the noise level that may be affecting exams, particularly in the afternoons as a number of exams run until 4 or 5pm.

Ambulances and Insurance

A reminder that if an ambulance needs to be called to the school (or school activity) for your child, the costs incurred are the responsibility of the parents.

If you have ambulance cover as part of your private health insurance package, pass the ambulance bill on to your provider and they will cover the cost.

Reminder: Absentees and Extended Absences

It is the responsibility of parents to explain the reason for any absence from school. There are two ways for you to communicate this information to us:

  1. Email - please email absent@nbcs.nsw.edu.au; or
  2. Phone NBCS on 9450 1311, choose option 1 and record your absentee message.

In the event that we do not receive notification regarding absences, a text message will be sent to parents on the day alerting them to their child's absence from school. If necessary, this will be followed up by an "unexplained absences or late arrival" letter reminding parents to advise the school of the details of why your child was away.

If the absence is not illness related and is planned to be for more than 2 days, it is a legal requirement that parents apply for leave and a Certificate of Exemption for the student/s. Parents should complete the application form online (www.nbcs.nsw.edu.au/leave), print it and hand in the signed application to the School Office. Once the leave is approved, a Certificate of Exemption will be issued.

Empowering Parents

This week’s Parenting Ideas information sheets:

In association with our Empowering Parent Seminars, we have been providing additional weekly parent information sheets to support NBCS parents. Some information will be more relevant to Primary than Secondary and vice versa. This is to support families within our school community covering all age groups.

If you would like an information sheet on a specific topic sent via Wavelength, please contact Mrs Anne Jobson via the School Office (9450 1311).
