Diabetes UK has cancelled its annual conference and all associated events in Glasgow because of the coronavirus situation. The three-day event was due to start on Wednesday, March 18. Diabetes UK issues advice on coronavirusDiabetes UK has issued advice on the coronavirus warning people it can cause “severe symptoms and complications in people with diabetes”. In a post on its website, the organisation said it has pulled together a number of resources to help people with diabetes who have been concerned about the global outbreak. The charity said a number of people had been in touch “looking for advice”. Experts with a scientific background are being asked to review a draft report about the low carb diet and type 2 diabetes published on behalf of the government. The request comes as Public Health England (PHE) invited the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) to review the best available evidence around on low carbohydrate diets in a bid to update current UK government advice for people with type 2 diabetes. More than half (54%) of GPs and nurses who treat people with type 2 diabetes do not carry out the recommended annual Urine Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio (UACR) test, according to a new survey. The test, which is used to detect kidney damage that can lead to fatal complications, should be conducted every year, as it can provide a ‘window of opportunity’ where the rate of kidney damage can be slowed or even halted with the right treatment and lifestyle changes. Empagliflozin and dulaglutide were the most-prescribed drugs in their respective classes for treating type 2 diabetes in the United States between 2013 and 2018, new research has shown. Among people initiating oral sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors) over the five year period, empagliflozin (Jardiance, Boehringer Ingelheim/Lilly) became the most commonly prescribed glucose-lowering drug.
