What is a Patient's Sexual Orientation? Only Half of Providers Ask, According to Survey

A survey of sexual medicine specialists reveals that only about half routinely ask their patients about sexual orientation.

The respondents were 92 healthcare providers who treat men who have sex with men. All respondents were members of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA), an affiliated society of the ISSM.

When asked why they didn't inquire, some providers said that sexual orientation was "irrelevant to my management." Others said that if patients wanted their providers to know, they would self-disclose.

The survey results were published online in June in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. To learn more about the survey, the respondents, and the authors' views on the results, please click here.
