Cairns Regional Council e-news - Volume 13, 24 March 2016

Manning returned as Mayor

Bob Manning will be returned for a second term as Mayor of the Cairns Regional Council. Counting of votes is continuing and the full make-up of the new Council is expected to be confirmed next week. For the latest updates, visit the Electoral Commission Queensland website.  The new Council will be sworn in at a special meeting next month. The date and time will be advertised on our website and Facebook page. The meeting will be open to the public.

Drain stencils offer marine message

A free drain stencilling workshop will be held at Caravonica this Friday. Council has joined with the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre to deliver the workshops, which serve to remind the community that what goes down the drain can impact on the environment. The program is as an extension of the Living with Water project that documented flooding and resilience in the Barron River catchment. Residents are invited to get involved in three upcoming workshops, including a special Easter event on Good Friday that will feature an Easter Egg hunt, morning tea and barbecue. Participants who complete a related survey will go in the draw to win a household emergency kit valued at $100. Places are limited and registration is required. Phone 0409 696 939 or email.

School holiday fun

Cairns Esplanade and Cairns Libraries are once again offering free and fun school holiday activities during the Easter break. Activities such as Ozobot tiny robots, sand art, colouring in and Legomania will take over Cairns Libraries Branches. Bookings are required for most activities, so see our website for full details and how to book. Starting on Tuesday 29 March, the Cairns Esplanade program includes kids' aqua Zumba, face painting and Ready Steady Go Kids sessions. No bookings necessary, just be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen and water. Kids must be supervised by a parent or carer at all times. See the full school holiday program.

Easter weekend closures

Council's offices and library branches will be closed this Easter long weekend, re-opening on Tuesday 29 March. An after-hours call centre will operate via the usual customer service number 4044 3044 for urgent matters. For other matters, you can contact us online at any time. Kerbside waste collections will be as per the normal schedule and waste transfer stations are open every day of the long weekend.

Playground upgrade

Palm Cove's beachside playground will be getting a makeover after the Easter holidays. As well as new play equipment, improvements will include new fencing shade sail and paths. Works are expected to take around 8-10 weeks, weather permitting. While we will do our best to minimise disruptions, there may be some noise and dust and temporary lane closures will be required at times. We appreciate your patience during these improvement works.
