New regulations regarding veterinary medicines comes into force from Jan 2020. These policies are designed to keep our animals, Farmers, Veterinarians, and the public safe from potential health risks, side-effect and drug resistance issues. Internationally appropriate management of these Veterinary medicines, underpins our recognised international trade and market access requirements. A hugely important concept that you will all fully understand. The new regulations involve limitations to the periods that Veterinarians are able to supply various vet medicines, without a subsequent consultation to gather enough information to authorise again. These revised periods of supply are as follows:
Also, new regulations state that before authorising RVMs, we now have to request a tally what stocks of RVM you already have on farm and the expiry dates of that stock. We will get a template form sent out to you nearer the RVM consultation time (May-June 2020). This form should be quick and simple for you to note those details before you come into the clinic. Early Preg TestingWe've had a busy month scanning herds for their first 1-2 weeks of mating. This can confirm early pregnancies (giving some idea of conception rate) but also treats Phantom Cows that are coming through as empty and therefore reducing the empty cow numbers. At this early stage, pregnancy rates overall appear to be slightly better than last year, next month will tell us more. Synchronised heifer scanning has seen overall good levels of pregnancy for their first rounds. Call your Infovet Vet if you need to get some of your Non-returns preg-tested. Pivot TestingJust a reminder, if you have FEP audits due we have three experienced Techs who are IrrigationNZ trained to Bucket Test your pivots. They have been busy testing some pivots/K-lines/Guns this season, but will get busy early next year. Calves - Watch out for Early Parasitism! We have been Faecal egg sampling some calf mobs, we are seeing some increasing levels of worm eggs coming through. Don't forget to recheck 10-14 days after drenching to ensure no parasites are surviving the drench. There is significantly more drench resistance being seen, especially in the North Island. Best practice is to use triple combination drenches where possible. If you have animals below 120kgs, you can safely use Ivermatrix Calf drench in those lighter weights and it is a triple combination drench. Talk to one of us if you are unsure. Tech Team - Calf WeighingWe are often asked if the Techs can help in this area, please contact Sarah as we can offer several options with one or more people:
And everything else in between! Bull TeamsWatch your Bulls for any sign of Lameness or illness, both will deem them infertile for up to 9 weeks. Therefore you cannot continue to factor them into your bull team numbers. These bulls need to come out of the group and recuperate, and get sound enough to be trucked. Remember 25th Oct mating is a 1st October calving 2020. Especially for heifers, leaving Bulls in much after 25th Dec is not an ideal option. SGL semen use on MA cows is not included here. Hoof Knife SharpeningThis is a service we offer to make your lame cows less of a drag! With most knives brought to the clinic, we can create a good sharp edge, and polish out some grooves. However we get some knives that have been damaged by stones, or sharpened on the wrong side, while we may improve these, you sometimes need a new knife. Typical turnaround time for knives being dropped to the clinic is two days, depending on workload. The cost is $9 (excl GST) per knife. Neil Chesterton - Lameness CourseIf you are interested in attending a lameness course by Neil Chesterton, please register with Kim at Culverden. This is an all day course on Tuesday 25 February. The cost is $100, which includes lunch. There is limited space so register now!
