Notes from Father Grecco

School families planning to apply for the “Bishop’s Education Fund” scholarships MUST meet the following criteria for a pastor’s signature on the application: 1) Child(ren) must be baptized Catholics; 2) the family must be registered in the parish whose pastor’s signature they seek; 3) the family must be using the “envelope” offering system of the parish and practicing the Catholic faith (attending Mass and receiving sacraments) regularly. Forms must be presented for signature by March 8, 2016.

The Catholic Church requires her members to observe the “Easter Duty” each year. This requires all Catholics to receive the Eucharist during the time between the First Sunday of Lent (this year: February 14) and Trinity Sunday (this year: May 22). The sacrament of reconciliation is required before reception of the Eucharist if the faith is not practiced and Mass attendance is not regular. The ideal for the individual Catholic is that the Eucharist be received regularly if the recipient is spiritually eligible.

Bishop Zubik opened the “Door of Mercy” on December 13, 2015. The door located at the left transept of St. Paul Cathedral. An Indulgence is granted to those who visit the Cathedral, walk through the Holy Door and meet the following requirements:. Complete detachment from sin, including venial sin. The fundamental conditions of sincere repentance and a complete detachment from sin must be met. Those wishing to receive an indulgence must be in a state of grace. They should go to confession if necessary, receive the Eucharist, pray according to the Pope’s intentions and perform the act that the Church attaches to the indulgence (visiting the Cathedral).

Annual Appeal

The Monsignor Keene Activities Building has been a hub of activity in the life of the school, parish and East End community since 1958. This year’s annual fund will assist with the important and long overdue need for ventilation upgrades and improvements for the future.

Current students and alumni have been able to use the facility to learn sports skills, including tennis, basketball and volleyball through clinics and in team practice. Sacred Heart home games have been and continue to be played there, and many a Diocesan championship was celebrated on this attractive home court. Student Council activities, middle school dances, pep rallies, Scout meetings, the After-School Program, the adult bowling league, and the SH parish Women’s Guild have all benefited from the community spaces.

The Annual Fund for Sacred Heart Elementary School provides an opportunity for you to give back today and help support the project of the much needed Ventilation Upgrades and Improvements.Be sure to read more about the Annual Fund in the attractive appeal brochure being mailed to alumni and sent to school families via the Family Envelope.

Terra Nova tests begin April 4

While standardized testing is more than a month away (April 4 through April 12), we know you schedule doctor’s appointments well in advance.  Please make every effort to avoid doctor appointments and family trips during this testing week.

Junior Achievement students visit classrooms

Sacred Heart School welcomes the Duquesne University students who teach the Junior Achievement USA program, Our Community, to children in the primary grades. Hands-on classroom activities introduce students to social studies learning objectives. Topics include careers, product production, innovation, earning, taxes, government, money, business and decision making. The School of  Education at Duquesne University, Junior Achievement, and Sacred Heart School have benefited from this partnership for the past eight years.

Parent Lunch Subs Needed
As the year draws to end, we are in need of parents who can commit to extra Mondays or Tuesdays, with the understanding that it would be as recess monitor. Thanks in advance for your help.
