Artist Highlight:
Armin Pangerl
Armin Andreas Pangerl, born 13 May 1965 in Bayreuth Germany, writes and draws little stories and loosely coupled thoughts and ornamental structures. After suffering from cancer in 2008, the artist decided to leave abstract painting behind him and turned to drawing on paper and prosaic texts. In his work, he tries to reflect his perception with the greatest intensity. He lives contentedly in his little attic room and works on his art every day.
Nr 6, Pangerl (2020). Pen & crayon on paper,
14 x 20 in. (35 x 50 cm)
Nr 5, Pangerl (2020). Pen & crayon on paper,

Nr 11, Pangerl (2020). Pen & crayon on paper, 20 x 20 in. (50 x 50 cm)
He uses pastel colouring in his pieces. They come closest to being diary-like notes, and each sheet is an individual work of art. For further information, visit www.arminpangerl.com.
Barbican:
Dubuffet, Brutal Beauty17 May – 22 August, 202 Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty is at Barbican Art Gallery from 17 May – 22 August (www.barbican.org.uk). The exhibition is sponsored by Sotheby’s.
"Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty" by Barbican Centre (2021) Brutal Beauty champions Dubuffet’s rebellious philosophy. Railing against conventional ideas of beauty, he tried to capture the poetry of everyday life in a gritty, more authentic way.
L’Extravagante (The Extravagant One) exhibition poster, Jean Dubuffet (1954). Oil on canvas, 28.5 x 36 in. (73 x 92 cm), courtesy: Private Collection © ADAGP, Paris and DACS, London 2020 Alongside his own work, the exhibition features works from Dubuffet’s collection of Art Brut (a phrase he coined, which translates literally as ‘raw art’). Acquired throughout his life, these works, and the artists that created them, profoundly impacted his approach to the making and meaning of art.
Art Brut en Compagnie:
Les Bruts29 January – 25 May 2021 Art Brut en Compagnie present an extended exhibition of 235 works by 33 creators at L'arc - scène nationale Le Creusot, France.
Featured artists include André Robillard, Guy Brunet, Alain Genty, Joseph Donadello, Yves-Jules Fleuri and many more. Curators Alain Moreau and Florence Le Maux take us on an astonishing journey in a world populated by sputniks, guns, strange animals, fairy birds, stars of cinema, kings, queens and men at the wheel of unreal vehicles.
Guy Brunet (b. 1945) is the master of cinema art brut. The cut-out cardboard figures and his renditions of film posters celebrate the stars of his golden age of film. The figures are of Hollywood actors he admired as a child when his parents ran a cinema.
André Robillard (b. 1931) had a difficult start to life. He was interned at 19 in a psychiatric hospital. A prolific artist, he created his first rifle in 1964 with materials he salvaged from the hospital dump. He has since become an indisputable figure in art brut, dubbed as such by Jean Dubuffet.
