Click here Social Cohesion updateKia ora e te whanau, Thank you all for getting back to me so quickly about the Xmas Party RSVPs, it’s made organising for the end of the year so much easier. I’m sure you’ve all been wondering what this “mysterious” event Andrew P included in the calendar is, so without further hesitation (and only a week away) here it is: The Mysterious Social Cohesion Event(s): Halloween Happenings for Friday 30 October We all know Halloween is around the corner, and although the holiday may carry more prominence in Northern parts of the globe, we thought it would be fun to celebrate a little with a costume challenge! I know you may be thinking costumes in the work place are over the top, but do not fear! We have picked a theme that is versatile to cater to both exhibitionists and wallflowers alike. The theme is: Fictional characters. You may choose to go full Gandalf from LOTR or all out Elizabeth Bennett a la Pride and Prejudice. Or maybe you want be more subtle and go as Malcom Tucker from The Thick of It Dana Scully from X-Files (both pretty easy costumes if you ask me). Alongside our usual morning tea, there will be prizes awarded for the best costumes. But that’s not all! Join us later in the afternoon for a casual bevvy either at the level 8 kitchen area or up on level 12. Let’s raise some spirits (but hopefully not some spirits of the paranormal kind) and toast to the Spring! Social Charities Conference 4 NovemberSlightly social, on Wednesday 4 November from 1pm to 5pm, as the United States of America hears the slow tide of results about its presidential fortunes, charities academics, lawyers, accountants, and regulators will do battle in a conference royale. Hon Justice Steven Kos, Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal is the key note speaker, and little known General Manager Stephen Reilly is giving a blistering address defending the concept of charity in the 21st century. There are also all kinds of excellent presentations on reporting, closing down charities, and charities that do business. Its all on Zoom, but not using the webinar, its like a giant zoom meeting, there will be opportunities for discussion, and break out rooms. Many Charities Services people are already signed up, but if you are interested, talk to your manager. You can read the wild conference programme and details here. Where do you recommended going? Please send through your recommendation for best café, bar or restaurant in Wellington. Lucy Taste of home is is one of my favourite eating spots (it’s too small to be called a restaurant). Location: 128 Vivian Street, Te Aro, Wellington Rose Top left: The Dumpling Company 3a, 44 The Terrace, Wellington Top Centre: In House Catering, they do home delivery and are based in Newlands Top right: Fix & Fogg 5 Eva Street, Te Aro, Wellington Bottom left: Mr Goes 59 Taranaki Street, Te Aro, Wellington Bottom Centre: La Cloche 134 Hutt Road, Kaiwharawhara, Wellington Bottom Right: The Butcher And Brewer 175 Jackson Street, Petone, Lower Hutt Emma My new local is Onepū, right next to Lyall Bay! They do ice cream, milkshakes, baking and of course coffee. I like to grab a milkshake and then go watch the dogs at Lyall Bay. They also have a very aesthetic website: https://www.onepu.co.nz/ Andrew. P The Best Vegan Burger: Sweet Release is a great little vegan restaurant on Manners St. For Wellington on a Plate, the burger they have put together “Eden” Burger does a spooky rendition of bacon and fried egg, truly delicious. Highly recommend. Andrew. N Rita’s slow takeover of Wellington Rita is a small restaurant in Aro Valley with a bit of a twist. You book in for a two hour spot, and get a menu they designed on the day. It’s all seasonal ingredients, and it takes all the decision making away from you (except for a couple of sides and your drink choice). Rita is a great restaurant, and one I’d recommend for a special occasion, but they’re also relevant because their previous employees are slowly taking over Wellington! Glass on Chew’s Lane started out as a spot for owner Jonathan to showcase natural wine – with a particular focus on French producers you can’t really get anywhere else in Wellington. A little while ago they changed head chefs, and brought Romesh on board. Romesh used to work at Rita, and really shows off his Sri Lankan and Russian heritage in his food. The Russian honey cake he makes is ridiculous (in a good way). Mason in Newtown describes itself as “a restaurant masquerading as a bar.” This place is tiny (it’s in the old Death Ray Records building if that means anything to you), but they’re putting out great food. Head chef Matt (also from Rita) has a bit of a focus on Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food. You shouldn’t go past the broadbean falafel and freshly grilled pita bread that are always on the menu (for good reason). Bonus: hidden coffee spot in Newtown Even the real coffee fiends among us may not have heard about Rich Coffee Roasters on Adelaide Road in Newtown. Their focus is selling to businesses, but they also sell direct to people. Plus, if you’re up their way on a Saturday, you can pop in and see Cam and Rich. They’ll make you a coffee and have a chat. If they’re not too busy, they’ll even nerd out with you over the roasting machines and show you their spreadsheets. If you’re super into coffee, I can definitely recommend.
