2015 Hazel Miller grant

Happily, the Foundation also announces that it has received $38,700 in grant funding from the Hazel Miller Foundation to support scholarships for graduating Edmonds School District students to pursue post-secondary education.

Hazel Miller, a long-time Edmonds resident, was keenly interested in and committed to supporting the education of youth. As a result of her generosity, the foundation will award two $5,000 Hazel and Morris Miller Foundation scholarships to one male and one female graduate in the district. Awards will be based on financial need as well as academic and community service merit. Additionally, the foundation will award eleven $2,000 Hazel Miller Memorial scholarships to one male and one female from our five comprehensive high schools, and one to a graduate from either Edmonds Heights K-12 or E-learning programs. Foundation scholarships

The Foundation has been very blessed by the generous gifts of our alumni and community members. Thanks to your generous support, we will increase scholarship awards this year to close to $70,000! We are providing scholarships for graduating students to pursue their dreams – whether that is vocational, two-year or four-year schooling. In today’s competitive and global arena, and with the ever-increasing costs of living, having a higher education is even more paramount to both individual and business success.  We want our students to be self-sustaining, and to earn living wage jobs for themselves and their families. We value your treasured gifts – no matter the size! Make a donation online, or mail in your donation: Foundation for Edmonds School District, PO Box 390, Lynnwood, WA 98046. To include alumni news, print out a pledge form and mail that in with your donation.

Please help us to both continue and increase our scholarship offerings by either making an annual gift or even a legacy gift, in memory of a beloved family, friend or colleague. Read below how Ed Nixon decided to establish a scholarship in honor of his wife, Gay Nixon.

Dear Deborah,
Thank you for the opportunity to tell you a bit more about why I decided to set up a scholarship program through the Foundation for Edmonds School District in honor of my wife Gay Nixon. It has been over a year since her passing and it is safe to say, I miss her dearly.

Many will remember Gay for her commitment to the craft of teaching, her love of life and learning. As a math teacher in the district for nearly 30 years at both Lynnwood and Woodway High Schools, she brought that love of learning to her students and wanted them to strive for greatness. She encouraged them to observe keenly and wanted them to think beyond the obvious conclusions. Even with her lower level math classes, she wanted those students to gain self confidence and discover for themselves all that they did know, not what they didn’t know.
