The Brief »Are we equipped as a university to increase the capabilities of people to intentionally use — or choose not to use — AI and other computational systems in ways that further human and organizational values? That question sits at the heart of what the Hub for AI and digital leadership (HAIL) is working to address. Our answer, and what we believe sets the University of Pittsburgh apart, is a focus on digital leadership. Pitt's strength lies in the application of innovation within community — from medicine, to civics, to the arts. As educators, our role isn't to produce AI power users. It's to develop the human qualities that make AI collaboration responsible, effective, and grounded in our values across real, applied contexts. We said the same about responsible data science nearly a year ago. Digital leadership, as we see it, rests on three attributes we believe every student, faculty member, and staff should cultivate:
HAIL is actively reviewing and seeking examples of how these qualities are being applied across a range of experiences and contexts where people are driving AI systems. Read more below. Digital Leadership builds from experience. Our graphic above traces that journey, from AI-related experiences and courses through to the three core attributes of digital leadership. This year's new and updated courses are already accelerating the path, connecting across multiple skills at once and asking learners to make intentional choices about AI. That's Digital Leadership in action. Beyond Pitt »What We're Noticing—Emerging Trends, Research, and Perspectives Sharing AI and Data Science
