Is the Cairns region getting a fair share?Cairns Regional Council has undertaken detailed analysis of the budgeted capital expenditure (CAPEX) included in the Queensland State Government Budget for 2018/19 budget and also the previous budgets stretching back to 2012/13. It highlights that the Cairns SA4 region has received the lowest CAPEX budget allocation per capita over the past seven years of any region outside South East Queensland. And whilst budgeted capital expenditure across the whole State of Queensland increased by 14% compared to the prior year in 2018/19, the allocation for the Cairns region actually decreased by 11%. Building a shared vision for CairnsCouncil is leading the development of a shared vision for Cairns. The shared vision will lay out key strategic themes for the region and identify the projects, investment and policy decisions that are needed to achieve them. The ultimate aim of the shared vision is to secure the long term prosperity of our region and continue to deliver improvements in quality of life for our community A shared vision will also provide a foundation for securing a potential City Deal for Cairns. Council has convened stakeholder workshops to commence the development of the vision and looks forward to sharing the outcomes more broadly as we progress and so we can all advocate for the initiatives that will deliver improved quality of life and prosperity for our region.
