Scientists Test Possible Treatment for Premature Ejaculation

Benzocaine, a topical anesthetic often used to treat pain and itching, might also help men with premature ejaculation (PE).

In a two-month study of 21 heterosexual men with PE, men who used benzocaine wipes could "last" longer than those who used a placebo wipe.

The men in the treatment group said they felt more control over their ejaculation, less sexual distress, and improved sexual satisfaction.

Benzocaine is still not an approved treatment for PE, however. Men who have trouble ejaculating should see their doctor.

Oxytocin for HSDD Good for Couples, Study Finds

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) - an unexplained decline in libido - can be distressing for couples. Recently, scientists discovered that oxytocin might help, though not directly.

They studied 30 heterosexual couples in which the woman was being treated for HSDD. Some of the women used an oxytocin nasal spray before sex. The rest used a placebo spray.

Both the treatment and placebo groups developed better sexual function. How could that be? The researchers thought the answer might be linked to improved communication between partners.

The study was published online in February in Fertility and Sterility. For more details, click here.
