Sonographer Regulation in Australia: Update
|
|
|
The regulation of sonographers is one of the most significant issues for our profession in Australia and for the safety and protection of the public we are requesting that the sonography profession be added to the Medical Radiation Practitioner Board.
For the last two years a Working Group for Sonographer Regulation, with membership from the ASA, ASUM, ASAR and a sonographer representative, have been undertaking work to develop a submission to Australia’s Governments that seeks to address this issue by responding to the assessment criteria that the National Health Council has set.
During October and November, the Working Group is engaging the broader medical industry, sonographer employers, sonographer education institutions, and health departments to review a draft of this submission. Following this process, the submission for the regulation of Australian sonographers will be finalised and will go to Health Ministers for a decision.

Following our AGM earlier this week, we would like to share the changes to the ASUM Council representation for 2020-2021.
''With Fred’s leadership, ASUM has developed a more inclusive way of thinking. ASUM is striving to create an ultrasound community rather than a society. Together we are stronger than we are as individuals. Whether that be in relation to standards, education or advancing the profession of ultrasound. I believe in what we are creating here at ASUM and I trust we can continue developing the vision''- Karen Mizia

Welcome Dr Karen Mizia

She has supported ASUM & the profession extensively over many years as an examiner for the DMU and DDU, a member of the Research Grants Board, Conference scientific committee and presenter and currently as chair of the Standards of Practice (SOP) Board. During her involvement with SOP she has strived to ensure that the policies and guidelines maintain a high standard without becoming too prescriptive.

World Radiography Day (WRD) and National Radiographers and Radiation Therapists’ Week (NRRTW) provides us with an opportunity to acknowledge the resilience and innovation shown by frontline staff in our hospitals and clinics when dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The announcement of a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic by the World Health Organisation on 11th March 20201 created a ‘new normal’ in which many areas of our known existence underwent forced change. Spread of the COVID-19 virus was found to be close contact, a major challenge for frontline health care workers; resilience and innovation were clearly needed going forward and the medical imaging and radiation therapy community have risen to the occasion.
