To vote or not to vote? How does one know who is on the ballot? The President may be easy, but what about local, township, or state elections? What about the Senate and House of Representatives? Who are these people and what do they stand for? You might hate politics, especially during an election cycle. For some it’s like picking the football, basketball, or hockey team you want to win. For others it a more serious decision and for some, it is just a time they wish would pass so they can get on with their lives without the annoyance of political advertisements. For a moment, stop and consider what voting means. We live in a democracy. It is a form of governance where elected representatives from the
public (not the ruling power or monarch) make the government. Voting is your RIGHT, and RESPONSIBILITY to elect candidates and select the kind of government you want. If you don’t vote, because it doesn’t matter, think again.
------------------------------
NOT VOTING IS GIVING UP YOUR RIGHT TO BE PART OF THE PROCESS.ITS ALLOWING SOMEONE ELSE TO CHOOSE FOR YOU.
DO· Vote, either by mail, by going to an early voting location, or in person
· Follow the endorsements in the newspaper. The Daily Herald as well as others have a
fairly long process to evaluate and endorse candidates.
· Visit the candidate’s website for the facts about where they want to take us.
· Talk to someone you know and trust. Someone who can give you some background on the
issues for a specific election.
· Contact the candidates themselves. All candidates have offices or websites where they
can be contacted, and you will get a response from them.
DON’T· Turn to Facebook and other social media. They have been used to spread false
information about candidates.
· Pick a candidate because everyone else is. Always ask why? Think about what the
candidate has said or done, and consider your own ideas about the future.
· Try to pick a winner. This is not a sporting event, picking the winner is not goal.
· Pick a name on the ballot just because you think you need to fill in all the blanks. It’s not a
test. If you find yourself in the voting booth and you do not know who to vote for, leave it
blank.
Make your voice count. VOTE!
Why participate?· BECAUSE ITS FUN! · BECAUSE YOU MAKE NEW FRIENDS! · BECAUSE IN THIS CRAZY WORLD, KNOWING YOUR NEIGHBORS HELPS US FEEL
LESS ALONE! · BECAUSE IT HELPS KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOOD SAFER
