1. Venezuelan Salmonella outbreak sickens nearly 250

A Salmonella outbreak has been reported in a the state of Bolívar in Venezuela; with almost 250 people affected.

2. Canadian authorities expand deli meats recall

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) updated an earlier food recall warning due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. One reported illness may be associated with the consumption of products included in the Dec. 7 warning.

3. FSA revises UK guidance for vac packed fresh meat

Shelf-life guidance for vacuum and modified atmosphere packed (VP/MAP) chilled fresh beef, lamb and pork has been updated by the Food Standards Agency. Food business operators will now be able to choose a safe shelf-life for these specific products in line with their existing food safety management systems.

4. USDA to address ‘misleading’ processed meat labels

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has said it will stop requiring the terms “Uncured” and “No Nitrate or Nitrite Added” on labels for meat processed with nitrates or nitrites from non-synthetic sources, such as celery powder.

5. 400 outbreaks reported in Germany in 2019

According to recently released statistics, in 2019 more than 400 foodborne outbreaks were reported in Germany; with almost 2,000 illnesses and five deaths.

6. Alleged whiskey fraud uncovered in Spain

What is thought to be one of the largest criminal networks for the production and illegal distribution of whiskey has been uncovered by Spanish authorities.
