U.S. Veteran Receives World's First Penis and Scrotum Transplant
Surgeons at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore performed the world's first penis and scrotum transplant last March.
The recipient was a U.S. military veteran who had been wounded by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.
During the 14-hour operation, a team of 11 surgeons transplanted the penis, scrotum (without testes), and part of the abdominal wall from a deceased donor. They had been preparing for the surgery for five years.
Surgeons were "optimistic" that the patient would regain urinary and sexual function.
