Welcome to Issue #06 of Habitat 2013

Message from the Director

While you are finishing up your work for Semester 1, you can feel satisfied knowing that Bachelor of Environments graduates have the highest rate of full-time employment of any New Generation degree graduate. This shows that B Envs degree and its graduates are highly prized by industry.

As we reach the end of another semester, and lack of sleep and stress make emotions run high, I ask you to be considerate of others and your environment. Your access to 757 Swanston, Frank Tate and Baldwin Spencer buildings should be treated with care. I am aware of incidents of students damaging property, making models outside of designated model-making areas, eating food and drink near computers, and spray-painting models inside buildings. I am also aware that some students have used their student ID to allow friends into the buildings outside of normal business hours. Please be aware that such actions can be grounds for the immediate confiscation of your student card and may require you to meet with a misconduct committee.

I wish you best of luck for your final exams, assignments and crits. Take deep breaths, try to sleep, eat regularly, plan your time and keep well.

Associate Professor Clare Newton
Director, Bachelor of Environments

Master of IT (Spatial) pathway for BEnvs a success

Have you heard about the new Master of Information Technology (Spatial) pathway for Bachelor of Environments students?

Spatial information is all around us; from GPS to Google Earth, to mobile location-based social media applications such as foursquare.

The brand new course provides another pathway for BEnv graduates. Together with other MIT streams, the new MIT (Spatial) has hit the nerve in terms of student demand as well as industry interest. The MIT (Spatial) links taps into BEnvs students’ interests in characteristics of space and of place, behavioural patterns over space, and generating, providing and communicating spatial information.

BEnv graduates who have studied at least one programming subject (such as the Environments Elective COMP20005 Engineering Computation are eligible to apply for this 2 year (200 point) program.

Exams & Special Consideration

What are special and supplementary exams?

The University may give students the opportunity to sit special or supplementary exams in a very limited range of circumstances.

Special exams are only awarded if a student has applied for special consideration and been granted a special exam by a Special Consideration Committee.

Be advised that mark adjustments are not a possible outcome of special consideration. Click here to read about possible outcomes.

Supplementary exams are sometimes awarded if a student is on the verge of completing their course. Note that you cannot apply for a supplementary exam.

What if I cannot attend my exam?

Requests to have examinations rescheduled for reasons such as employment commitments, travel (including overseas travel), and social engagements (weddings, birthdays, etc.) will not be approved.

Students who are unable to attend the standard scheduled examination period or supplementary exam period due to compelling medical or personal grounds should click on the link below for information on how to proceed.

Not sure if you are eligible for a special or supplementary exam? Please contact the Environments and Design Student Centre for advice.
