TERM 1 WEEK 10 APRIL 4TH, 2018 OUR LADY OF GRACE NEWSLETTER PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Eastertide I hope you and your family had a fabulous Easter break. As we move into the Easter season, remember God’s perfect love for all mankind, and may that love fill you with hope for the weeks to come. If Christmas is a time of joy, Easter Sunday and the following weeks are a time of jubilation. Imagine the wonder and awe experienced by His disciples with the realisation that He had Risen – that their friend, teacher and leader had died but was now back amongst them. The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as one “great Sunday”. These above all others are the days for the singing of the Alleluia! Celtic Cross Next time you enter the school from the west side cast your eyes up to the ridge cap above the office. There you will see a dark coloured, Celtic Cross which sat on the roof of the convent for 50 years or so. Other reminders of the convent are its two foundation stones which are embedded in one of the verandah pillars outside Kindy Blue. Parent Interviews The staff of OLG work, teach and nurture our students across all domains: spiritual, academic, physical, social and emotional. These domains are as relevant at primary school as they are throughout life. Within that broad effort we attempt to build on the work of the children’s parents by enhancing the development of a set of key attributes that research indicates, and we believe, are core to a happy and fulfilled life. Through the ‘You Can Do It’ program, we teach children at all year levels how to develop the key “Habits of Mind” that are listed below. If you look around any of our classrooms you will see the five ’Keys to Success’ displayed. You will often hear them referred to when merit certificates are read out. These five skills and habits are taught through structured lessons as part of the Health Curriculum and are reinforced throughout each day of the school year. · Persistence: perseverance, tenacity, determination, resolve, resolution, resoluteness, staying power, purposefulness, firmness of purpose, patience, endurance, application, diligence, sedulousness, dedication, commitment, doggedness. · Confidence: self-assurance, self-confidence, self-reliance, belief in oneself, faith in oneself, positiveness, assertiveness, self-possession, nerve, poise, aplomb, presence of mind, phlegm, level-headedness, cool-headedness, firmness, courage, boldness, mettle, fortitude · Organisation: planning, arrangement, coordination, structuring, administration, organizing, running, management. · Getting along with others: o Attention and concentration: Sustained effort, doing activities without distraction and being able to hold that effort long enough to get the task done. o Receptive (understanding) language: Comprehension of language. o Expressive (using) language: The use of language through speech, sign or alternative forms of communication to communicate wants, needs, thoughts and ideas. o Play skills: Voluntary engagement in self motivated activities that are normally associated with pleasure and enjoyment where the activities may be, but are not necessarily, goal oriented. o Body language skills: The ways in which we communicate without using words and include things such as gestures, facial expressions, imitation, joint attention and eye-contact. o Self regulation: The ability to obtain, maintain and change one’s emotion, behaviour, attention and activity level appropriate for a task or situation in a socially acceptable manner. · Resilience: strength, toughness, hardiness; adaptability, buoyancy, flexibility, ability to bounce back. Because these habits of mind are, we believe, crucial to life success, we invite parents to meet with their children’s teacher(s) next week with a focus on their current development in these aspects. In areas such as these schools can only act to support parents, who are the child’s first and most influential educators. It is hoped that the exchange of thoughts on each child’s strengths and needs in these elements will lead to a unified effort between home and school to address the needs of each child. Safety vs Convenience There are now four main entries to the school. Which approach to use? 1. The safest is parking and walking your child into or out of the school. 2. The Kiss and Drive. Closely supervised, single lane traffic, courteous and patient drivers. 3. Morning: Park and wave goodbye as your child navigates the traffic. 4. Afternoon: Have your child walk down to the car park and wait for you to arrive. Your child(ren) play unsupervised on the side of a busy thoroughfare. 5. Have you children make their way to the family car, through the traffic, unsupervised. I believe that parents would be aghast if the school permitted our students to make their way down to the City playground without close supervision and we would never permit such lax safety management even though there is virtually no traffic at those times we access the playground. The systems we have in place are for your children’s safety. We value their safety above your convenience – something that, on reflection, I am certain you agree with. Below is a quote from an email I received recently. “Today while entering the 'kiss and go' line I witnessed probably the worst driving I have ever seen. I was on the main road indicating left to enter the drive when someone in a white SUV reversed from one of the first church bays right out onto the main road. She did so at speed and it was only by luck that no one was walking on the footpath/cycle path. She was then followed by another mum who reversed down the drive from another bay. and then actually drove on the grass, undertaking the bus before pulling out onto the road! The second mum was in a large white SUV.” Stand back and let them have a go. Agency is one of the most powerful cognitive motivators for children. They learn and grow when they can see and feel the consequences of their own actions. They begin to understand cause and effect during their first year, and they thrive on empowerment — something parents can readily hear as toddlers start to say “I do it myself”. Being a parent is like riding a roller coaster; sometimes we're up, sometimes we're down; it's frantic and frightening in some ways but exciting and rewarding in more ways. For every person, the family is the cradle of life where they are born and grow; the climate of affection that unites the family is where we learn about truth and goodness. No matter what size family we live in, we all rely on our family to provide an affirming, positive and loving experience that is supportive and gives us an identity of who we are and what’s unique about us. Family life teaches us how to share, how to stand up for ourselves and how to love other people. In addition to providing for our physical welfare, a family provides for the emotional and mental welfare of each of its members. Family provides the esteem and confidence when we set out to face each new day and family provides the comfort and consolation when we return. If you’re looking for investment advice, go for the advisor who tells you to invest in your family. The dividends will come daily, will be warming to the heart and will provide a consistent stream of emotional security; what an inheritance your children will have. WALKATHON: Only 2 days to go, hope you have all been busy over the last couple of weeks collecting sponsors. Just a reminder the walkathon will be held on Friday 6th April at 1.30pm. If not already given to their teacher, the children are to bring the card to school on the day of the walk so each lap can be recorded. After the event please collect money from your sponsors and drop it into the box in the office in an envelope/snap lock bag clearly marked with your child’s name and class together with the stamped card. The first class with all cards/money returned wins a prize!. We still need some more helpers so if you can help out on the day please put your name down on the sheet in the office. You don’t need to walk, just stamp cards as the kids come past and siblings/grandparents/friends/aunts & uncles are welcome. Helpers are to be at the oval near the Recreation Centre by 1.15 pm. If you have any queries please contact Linda D’Vaz on 0411125787 or Carolyn Halleen on 0413591810 “OLG Run for Fun” is a free running club where kids of all ages and fitness levels can come together before school to run and exercise in a positive and supportive environment. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to run with the kids and have fun. We all know running is a great way to get fit, but it offers so much more. Kids who exercise in the morning are generally more engaged and focused during lesson time. Running clubs enable kids to build friendships and have fun. Running builds healthy hearts and minds and brings joy to children. OLG Run for Fun is run by volunteer parents each Tuesday and Thursday morning during school terms and has now commenced. The more parents, the more fun! OLG Run for Fun will include some warm up activities and games and there will be a couple of running courses, of different lengths, around Charles Riley Reserve to suit different ages and fitness levels. There will be no free breakfast or awards - it’s just for fun. As the club is run by volunteer parents, students in Year 3 or below must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to ensure adequate supervision. A permission slip for all students must be completed before your child can participate. Permission slips will be available for signing at the first session your child chooses to attend. Days: Every Tuesday and Thursday morning The body achieves what the mind believes. Student Authorisation form - click here
