Citizen Science participant survey

Goodbye and thank you Katie Irvine!

Katie Irvine’s last day with the SA Murray-Darling Basin’s Citizen Science program was 28 June 2019 as she moved on to a full time citizen science role with Adelaide University.

We wish her all the best and thank her very much for her contribution to citizen science in the SAMDB region. Katie worked with us for almost two years.

Message from Katie:
Thank you to all of the people who volunteer their time, knowledge and expertise to contribute to the SA Murray-Darling Basin citizen science projects. Information collected by citizen scientists about water quality, soil acidity, fungi, bat, frog, turtle and bird populations is invaluable for keeping track of the state of biodiversity and soil in the region. It has been a pleasure to work with you, I wish you all the best and hope our paths cross again in the future.

Sylvia Clarke has now returned as the Citizen Science Project Officer and will be the main contact for any enquiries.

Katie and Sylvia will still be working together as they are both members of the management team of the SA Chapter of the Australian Citizen Science Association.

If you would like to be kept informed about citizen science projects across South Australia, please email the Australian Citizen Science Association - SA chapter at acsasacommittee@gmail.com to receive their e-newsletters.

National Waterbug Blitz 2019

Have you ever been involved in river or wetland monitoring or are you interested in learning how to get involved?

The National Waterbug Blitz project have offered to run workshops in our region again and we are looking for expressions of interest from individuals, groups or schools who might want to begin or resume community catchment monitoring in their local area.

Learn how to do your own waterbug monitoring, and use the Waterbug App to have your bug identifications verified by experts. You can collect some important information about the health of your catchment and contribute to this national project.

Training is likely to be held either in the first half of September or late October.

Please contact Sylvia Clarke sylvia.clarke@sa.gov.au or 0428 743 487 if you are interested and let us know your preferred location and time e.g. weekends or weekdays.

Citizen Science participant survey

SAMDB Citizen Scientists have been invited to participate in an online survey by Maria Peter from Kiel University (Germany) on the personal experiences of citizen science participants – that means YOUR experiences.

Your answers will help researchers to better understand what participants get out of their involvement in citizen science projects. This information will help citizen science project managers and researchers to develop projects so they are better tailored to the needs of their participants.

The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete.

Projects that involve volunteers in scientific research go by many different names. In this survey, the term 'citizen science' is used.

Click here to complete the survey.

***You must be 18 years or older to participate in this survey.***
