UKHOSPITALITY PROPOSED GUIDELINESUKHospitality has submitted a 75-page working document to the government that outlines measures for businesses to take across the hospitality industry. The guidelines offer a first glimpse into a new socially distanced world of eating and drinking, when Britain reopens. The trade body believes the industry should not take a one-size-fits-all approach, instead suggesting flexibility. Pubs, restaurants, hotels and other establishments should consider fewer staff in kitchens, no buffet or open food stations and individual condiments and cutlery brought to tables when serving customers. More news will be shared as the industry prepares to reopen come July. 2. SPAIN EATS MORE MEATSpain has increased meat consumption by more than 16% during the first month of lockdown, with beef being the preferred protein. Household expenditure has increased by 15.4% with reference to food in general, with beef, chicken and pork being the most popular meat purchases, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture. In March, more than 214,000 tonnes of meat were consumed by Spaniards in their homes, compared with 184,000 tonnes reported in the same month last year, showing heightened consumer commitment to meat products during these unprecedented times. 3. DR. OETKER'S GLOBAL PIZZA REPORTWhether it’s pepperoni, chicken, veggie, beef or plain cheese, pizza was revealed to be one of the world’s fastest growing out-of-home dishes, estimated to be worth more than £4.9billion, in a global survey taken earlier this year. BURGER KING'S AT-HOME KITSBurger King Japan has launched its new CooKING Burger @Home Whopper kits as a limited time offer. The new kits are available via delivery only allowing people to make their own fast food treat without leaving the house. These include pre-cooked, flame-grilled Whopper patties along with matching Whopper sesame seed buns. There are two kits available for delivery, one that contains enough ingredients to create two plain Whopper Burgers and one with enough ingredients to build four Whopper Burgers. All kits contain instructions on how to build a Whopper burger. 6. QSR STATE OF THE INDUSTRYQuick service restaurants are seeing positive sales reports as they work in adapted scenarios amid lockdown. In the U.S., many chains were able to stay afloat through drive-thru and takeaway services, as Americans continued to enjoy meals from restaurants. In addition, as the economy takes a downturn, consumers are looking for more value-based options and a reason to leave the house. Restaurant Business shares its thoughts on how to proceed as circumstances are rapidly changing. 7. CHOP CHOPSainsbury’s is rapidly rolling out Chop Chop, its own bicycle delivery service, to 20 cities across the UK. Once the 50-store rollout is completed mid-June, approximately 3.2 million households will be able to get Sainsbury’s groceries delivered directly to their door within the hour. Customers can order up to 20 products from a range of over 3,000 grocery and household items via the Chop Chop app. In addition, Aldi UK has partnered with Deliveroo and started trialling its delivery service to customers this week. Through the Deliveroo app, customers will be able to order from more than 150 Aldi products. 8. SMASHBURGER'S LATEST LAUNCHFollowing a successful market trial in March, American hamburger chain Smashburger have launched its new Smoked Bacon Brisket Burger just in time for Summer 2020. The Smoked Bacon Brisket Burger comprises of a brioche bun topped with a decadent Angus beef patty and smoked brisket. The burger is further complemented with Applewood Smoked Bacon, smoked cheddar, pickles and BBQ sauce. Smashburger is also offering customers the option to create the Smoked Bacon Brisket Burger in their own kitchens at home, as part of the brand’s new “Take Home Meal Kits.” Each kit includes four Smoked Bacon Brisket Burgers and smash tots. 9. MCDONALD'S RESTART PRODUCTION Towards the end of May, Dawn Meats has reported it is to restart its burger production for McDonald’s restaurants across Europe and the UK. Following a cease in production as of mid-March, the Waterford-based dedicated facility redeployed affected employees across other areas of the business, following increased demand from online retail meat sales in Ireland. Staff will now return to the McDonald's plant in accordance with enhanced protocols, allowing production to restart efficiently, to meet the growing demand due to re-openings. McDonald’s is one of the largest purchasers of Irish beef exports at €163m.
