Action Learning

Being a freelance independent artist can, at times, feel isolated and unsupported.
Action Learning is a method to address challenges and find your own solutions with the support of a trusted network  of peers.

After the success of the first Action Learning sets, Independent Dance and Dancers’ Career Development jointly offer another opportunity for dance professionals seeking a rigorous, reflective space to develop.

What is Action Learning?

Action Learning is a form of peer mentoring. It is practical and focused on finding your own solutions.

A small group of six to eight peers (a 'set') meets regularly over the course of a year and, guided by an experienced facilitator, works through real-life projects and problems in a confidential space.
Through the process, participants find individually appropriate actions (rather than prescribing what they ‘should’ do), and reflect on their development.
It is a brilliant tool for addressing complex situations and refreshing your thinking.

Find more information on joining a set, including a FAQ, further reading about how the sets will run through the year on our website.

What is it like?

This is the only Action Learning programme in the UK specifically designed for dance artists. This is what the dance artists taking part in the first set had to say about their experience:

"A great tool to find possible solutions and feasible actions to problems or situations which can make us stuck or isolated."

“I learnt to ask questions; to find the ability to be open about challenges in my artistic and non-artistic life, and to be more precise in articulating what I need.”

"I was offered a platform where I could, without judgement, openly express myself, in all my idosyncronicities."
