A big shoutout to all of you who’ve already suited up in the red and yellow uniform, ensuring that countless beachgoers have made it home safe and sound. So far, you’ve tallied up over 13,000 hours on patrol, carried out 38 rescues, and administered 57 first aids. It’s amazing to think that surf lifeguards have been doing this important work for over 100 years. We were reminded of this last month when the Palmerston North Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) celebrated 75 years of patrolling Himatangi Beach. We know the local community is deeply grateful for that longstanding service, and you can read more about it below. In this month’s Member News, you’ll also find details about the new Junior Surf programme, Midway Surf Rescue’s exciting milestone, an entertaining read on Chris Dawson – the new Black Fins captain, and so much more! Happy reading and ka kite anō. Key Safety Messages for 2023/2024 This season we have reviewed our key safety messages based on incidents that have occurred over the last few seasons, Omnipoll research over the last three years, and international research and safety messages. The messages can be found here on the SLSNZ website. Please try to use them whenever possible. Maybe even print them out and keep them in your club, tower, and even on the beach if possible, so you can always refer to them. Maritime NZ Launches New Campaign With summer on our doorstep, more people are starting to enjoy time out on the water. Our friends over at Maritime New Zealand want to take this time to remind everyone that the ocean can be a dangerous place. So, if you’re heading out on a boat, remember to check the forecast, take two ways to call for help, and wear a lifejacket. Just like SLSNZ, Maritime wants everyone to return home safely and because every safe journey deserves to be celebrated, Maritime did exactly that. They welcomed an unsuspecting group of safe boaties returning to shore with huge fanfare. The welcoming party included a brass band, dancers, and plenty of people whooping and cheering on the jetty. It took us on a walk down memory lane, reminiscing on the “aerial shark patrols”, the “country loo” in the original club, and, of course, all of the amazing volunteers. Celebrating 75 years of surf lifeguarding is a remarkable accomplishment, and everyone who has contributed to the club’s success, big or small, should be proud. Click here to read more. Surf Lifeguards’ Heroic Roadside Rescue This month, we heard about an incredible rescue carried out by a couple of United North Piha surf lifeguards. Jessika Wanden-Hannay and Abby Ferguson came across a man unconscious in the middle of the road while they were driving back from the 90-Mile IRB Race. He had been pulled from his car after suffering a medical event and needed help urgently. Jessika and Abby swung into action using the skills they had learned as surf lifeguards, even though they were miles away from the red and yellow flags. Click here to read more. Thank You TSB This season we are sadly farewelling our major partner, TSB. We are very grateful for the partnership that started in 2016 and appreciate the impact they have had across the organisation over the past eight years. Their support has helped deliver training and development for surf lifeguards, our New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Championships, safety messaging, and club grants. Additionally, this year, we are excited to share that TSB has supported the implementation of some of our Volunteer Strategy Initiatives. These initiatives were developed by the Volunteer Strategy Working Group and have been used to prioritise the areas and focus that will help support our volunteers and clubs the most. They encompass various national projects and initiatives to enable clubs to deliver the best outcomes for volunteers across the country. The support provided, along with their contributions over the last eight years, shows what a wonderful partner they have been. We wish them every success for the future. Follow us!
