SODEBO TOASTS SNACKINGFrench meal solutions supplier, Sodebo has expanded its sandwich portfolio with a range of topped toasts called La Tartine. Exactly what the name suggests, slices of toast come with 2 toppings: Ham-Mozzarella and Cheese both with a grilled vegetable spread. The innovation ties in with the ever-increasing interest in snacking options in France. The ‘La Tartine’ range has a gourmet connotation but only takes 8 minutes to oven bake (€2.90 per 200g slice), available on sale next month. It’s not often foodservice and retail trends are so in tune with each other - Burger King France currently has a range of King Toast sandwiches on sale. 2. TESCO RULES OUT USA CHICKENUK grocery retailer Tesco has ruled out importing “chlorine-washed chicken” from the USA post-Brexit. In an interview with the Financial Times, CEO Dave Lewis shared research that people dislike the idea of bringing back farming and food processing techniques that had been phased out because of safety and animal welfare concerns. Other leading food retailers claim they will not change sourcing policies – according to the British Retail Consortium “Consumers drive the market; currently almost all fresh chicken is produced in Britain because that is what consumers want and we do not anticipate any change to this at the present.” 3. DOMINO'S ENTERS WORLD OF ANIMEWith the Rugby World Cup about to kick off this weekend, it seems timely to mention some innovation from Japan. Domino’s Japan has unveiled its Tsundere Pizza, a term frequently used to describe anime characters, namely someone who is initially cold (tsun) before showing a warmer, friendlier side (dere). The anime-inspired pizza is loaded with hot peppers and jalapenos “that may hurt” whereas the generous cheese topping offsets the spice levels. In other news, Domino’s UK has launched its Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza - yes adding bacon to its Cheeseburger Pizza launch of last year, available across UK and Ireland. 4. POPEYE'S BYOB CAMPAGINUS customers seemingly couldn’t get enough of Popeye’s new Chicken Sandwich that launched on Aug 12th. The chain struggled to keep up with the aggressive consumer demand and sold out in less than a month. Popeye’s said the sandwich will be back soon, and for good. In the meantime, Popeyes launched a Bring Your Own Bun (BYOB) Campaign to ease guests’ cravings - watch the campaign here >> Popeye’s upfront reaction to the shortage is similar to KFC’s last year. Its campaign responded with a timely ‘FCK, We’re Sorry’ ads in the Sun and Metro newspapers. . 5. PARIS AIRPORTS NEW FOOD DESTINATIONRecently the Top 9 covered new initiatives by French railways to enhance the catering experience for commuters and holidaymakers. Groupe ADP has a similar mission to offer the ultimate Parisian catering experience to the more than 105 million passengers (2018 estimates) passing through its two Paris airports Charles de Gaulle and Orly. Expect a strong French flair from the likes of Akrame Benallal’s new Vivanda Burger concept or Andre Lagardère’s Comptoir d'André as well as global brands such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Spanish fusion sushi concept Kirei, and the UK’s Wagamama and Caffe Nero. A new food court and a food hall are also planned for Orly by end 2021. 6. GREGGS EVENING OF FRIED CHICKENGreggs recently identified the evening occasion as its next target, following a successful repositioning from bakery to FTG, the introduction of a healthier ‘Balanced Choices’ offer, and strengthening its breakfast range (new breakfast boxes and porridge pots). This latest evening mission recognises changing consumer eating habits, more snacking, a growing appetite for hot food on the go, and the tried and tested fried chicken trend. After 4pm, Greggs customers can order from the new fried chicken range from its Hot To Go counters across 500 stores, which features southern-fried chicken goujons, spicy BBQ chicken bites and southern-fried potato wedges. 7. CHEEZ-IT LOVERS REJOICEPizza Hut USA recently partnered with Kellogg to create its new Stuffed Cheez-It pizza, inspired by the popular cracker in the US, except bigger. Running as a limited-time menu offering, the new snacking addition is made up of four big squares with a sharp and tangy Cheez-it flavour crust. Stuffing options include melted cheese or pepperoni and cheese with a marinara dipping sauce on the side. Pizza Hut sees this as the perfect add-on for a larger meal or an easy grab and go snack. Pizza Hut has previously partnered with popular brands such as Hershey’s for its brownies or Cinnabon for its mini cinnamon rolls. 8. PEPERAMI LAUNCHES CHILLED JERKYPeperami has unveiled its latest meat-snacking innovation of 2019, a Tender Jerky Chilled Snacking Duo in 2 flavours, Original and Hot. According to Peperami, the meat snacking industry has grown over 9% in the last two years. The Peperami Tender Jerky is made from beef and pork that have been cured, dried and beechwood-smoked. The chilled protein snacks are great for post-workout or afternoon snack. This follows the introduction earlier this year of Peperami & Cheese Snack Box, Pep’d Up Chicken Bites and Peperami Pastry Rolls – all aimed at revitalising the brand’s grocery sales (~£63mn Nielsen 52 w/e 29 December 2018]. 9. FIVE GUYS BREAKFAST BURGERS Breakfast is undisputedly the fastest-growing daypart in the eating out market. We have seen burger brands such as McDonald’s, thrive in the breakfast sector. Several other London burger burger chains have ventured to the breakfast scene, such as Byron and Patty & Bun – as well as casual dining chains embracing all-day dining like Bristol-based Loungers. Burger brand Five Guys is also tapping into this trend, serving an early morning range in Bristol since May and is considering a roll-out of a breakfast menu across its UK restaurants. The breakfast/brunch offer is available from 8-11am and includes burger with egg, cheese, and bacon fillings, coffee and orange juice priced from £3.95 to £6.45.
