Helping Haiti

During Catholic Schools Week, students enjoyed a creative Carnival activity complete with games and cotton candy, set up in the auditorium.  Each child brought a small donation to get in on the fun.

Happily, the Carnival raised $1,300 to be given to Partners in Progress for the benefit of St.Antoine School in Fondwa, Haiti.  The money will go to support teacher salaries and to enhance the lunch program for over 600 young people who attend  this remarkable rural school with classes from kindergarten through secondary school .

Some Haitian students have little at home to eat and walk several hours to attend classes. For 16 years,  children, families, and staff from SHES have joined parishioners in raising money to help those at the “sister school.”  The parish Hearts for Haiti Committee is deeply grateful to teacher, Angela Stead, who organized the project, with the help of Pam Giardina and others, from Sacred Heart Elementary School.

Notes from the Pastor

School families planning to apply for the “Bishop’s Education Fund”  (BEF)scholarships MUST meet the following criteria for the Pastor's signature on the application: 1) Child(ren) must be baptized Catholics; 2) the family must be registered in Sacred Heart parish; 3) the family must be using the “envelope” offering system of the parish and practicing the Catholic faith regularly (Mass attendance should be weekly). After determining your eligibility, contact Fr. Grecco at the rectory. Applications presented to the rectory office for signature on the deadline date will not be assured of attention.

Notes from the Office

Parish Fish Fry
Join friends and families from all around the city at the Parish Fish Fry, which takes place Fridays during lent (except for Good Friday) from 5:00-7:30 pm in the school cafeteria.  Phone orders begin at 4:00 pm by calling 412-361-3131. Baked or fried fish sandwiches ($7.50) or dinners ($10.00) are available. Dinner comes with fries or mac&cheese and coleslaw. There are some ala carte items, including pies from Oakmont Bakery. Come hungry and share in this traditional Lenten meal.

Financial Aid
Diocesan Financial Aid forms for 2017-2018 should be available very soon.  They are being prepared by FACTS management rather than the Private School Aid Service (PSAS), with whom we are all familiar.  We will distribute the forms to all of our families as soon as we receive them.  Financial aid is available for Catholic and non-Catholic families.  Your 2016 tax information is required and the original due date of March 15, 2017 has been extended to March 31st. Check our school website, http://www.sacredheartpgh.org for updated forms once they become available. Please note that preschool applications require the Principal’s signature, and Catholic applicants need to secure a Pastor’s signature.

Preschool now offers five days for four year olds
Next year, Sacred Heart Preschool will offer five full or half days for four year old students.  This means that the three year old program has been discontinued.  We hope this new option finds favor with the many families in need of a longer program.  The traditional three day program on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday remains intact. Some openings are still available.

Kindergarten for next year is beginning to fill up. Please apply right away if you need a space for your five year old next year.

Apples for Students Program
This year’s program wraps up on March 18th.  All purchases made at Giant Eagle by that date are eligible for credit to Sacred Heart whenever the cashier scans your Giant Eagle Advantage card which has been pre-registered to support our school. Visit www.gianteagle.com and use our school code – 0938 to register.

Family Rosary

Pope Francis has asked us to celebrate as a community a year dedicated to mercy. This Holy Year of Mercy is a time to help us rediscover the Church’s mission to bear witness to God’s love and the Gospel message.

We learn of divine mercy through Jesus’ passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension. In order to assist families to always be credible witnesses to mercy, professing it and living it daily, families are encouraged to come together to pray the rosary in church once a month prior to 9:30 a.m. Mass. Recitation begins at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday, March 5th. Spend the First Sunday of Lent in prayer with your children.

Sacred Heart Parish will host “Make Us Believers” a passion opera scored by Bob Summers.  Mr. Summers is the Youth Minister of St. Margaret Mary Parish in Moon Township.  The opera will take place on Sunday, March 26 at 3 p.m. in the church.

With a cast of more than 50 local people, they will come to tell the story of Christ’s arrest, death and resurrection through upbeat music, in the vein of “Godspell” or “Jesus Christ Superstar.”   The musical has been performed all across the Pittsburgh, Erie, and Youngstown Catholic dioceses during the Lenten season. A Free Will Offering will be accepted at the door and a light reception to meet the cast will immediately follow in the Auditorium.  If you have questions, please contact Sharon Smoller at  sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

Chalk Talks

Chalk Talks by Dee Ruckert, retired school teacher, will take place on Sunday, March 5 from 10:50 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. in the Auditorium. Dee uses pastels on a large canvas along with inspirational music to create a beautiful interpretation of a  gospel story in an ancient form of passing on the faith. Sacred Heart families are invited to join our Children’s Faith Formation and families for this truly special opportunity!  If you have questions, contact Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.
