Vote for your favourite innovation

Voting will open this weekend in the People's Choice category for the 2016 Tropical North Queensland Innovation Awards (TNQIA). A People’s Choice shortlist of 20 entries has been selected from the 68 applications received for this year’s awards.
Businesses and individuals from Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands, Cassowary Coast and as far afield as Normanton submitted their products, processes and services for the chance to share in the $40,000 prize pool. You can view the full list of entrants, with voting to open on Saturday 1 October. Winners of all eight TNQIA categories, including the People’s Choice, will be announced at a presentation event on Wednesday 16 November as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week.

 

Join the Fun Palace

Turn everyday items into game controllers and musical instruments or discovering the aerodynamics of a paper plane at the City Library Fun Palace this  Saturday. With a focus on to art and science, the day includes an introduction to Makey Makey (pictured), which  turns any object into a computerised touch pad. Bookings are required, phone 4044 3720.

Ride 2 Work

Join the commuter community and start your day a healthier way by cycling into the Cairns Esplanade on National Ride 2 Work Day - Wednesday 12 October. You'll pick up a free breakfast for your efforts and there will be free bicycle health checks and copies of our cycleway maps. Brekky will be served at the Western Events Lawn 6.30am to 8.30am.

Meeting in Babinda, changed dates

The next Ordinary Meeting of Council will be held at the Babinda RSL Hall, School St, Babinda, on Wednesday 26 October at 10am. All members of the public are welcome to attend. 

All Committee meetings for next month will be held on Wednesday 12 October, so as not to clash with the Local Government Association of Queensland conference the following week.

 

Disaster Centre open day

FInd out what should be in your household emergency kit at the Cairns Disaster Coordination Centre Open Day. SES and Firies will be there (with trucks!) and there will be free food and giveaways. You might even win a fully stocked  kit. Pop into the Windarra St centre on Saturday 7 October between 9am and 1pm.

 

App to help plants survive & thrive

Your garden may be more resilient than you think! A new web and mobile app is now available to help you work out how much water different plants really need to survive and thrive in our tropical climate. There's also info about water restrictions and water saving tips. Get to know Ginger & The Survivors on our YouTube Channel

 

Learn more at the free workshop

As part of National Water Week and the Thrive water conservation campaign, we’re holding a free community workshop to help achieve better water use in gardens. Get handy tips, see demonstrations of the difference in water consumption from different irrigation systems and learn more about the Thrive app. Come along to the Botanic Gardens Visitor Information Centre on Monday 17 October from 10am to 12 noon.

 

Safe Work breakfast

Cairns Regional Council is proud to sponsor the Cairns Safe Work Month breakfast forum as part of Queensland Safe Work Month. Featuring Qld Safety Ambassador, Shane Webcke (pictured), keynote speaker Paul Spinks and journalist, author and commentator Madonna King as MC. Places are limited, register now to be in the running for great prizes.  Brekky is will be served at the Shangri-La Hotel on Thursday 20 October. Cost is $77 pp. 

 

Collins Ave detours

A reminder that the Collins Ave bridge is being replaced and part of the road is closed to all traffic. The Cairns Botanic Gardens and Tanks Arts Centre remain open and are accessible via Pease St.
