Law Week 2019 (Monday, 13 May to Friday, 17 May) brought the legal profession and public together with a focus on law and justice in the community. Over 40 Law Week events were held across Western Australia, including in regional areas such as Kalgoorlie, Geraldton, Albany and Bunbury. The Law Society's new #LawyersMakeADifference campaign was launched during Law Week, aiming to communicate with the wider public, break down stereotypes and tell powerful, positive stories of real lawyers and their important work in the community. Law Week highlights included: - Law Week Breakfast and the Attorney General’s Community Service Law Awards featuring keynote address by Emeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher AM on ‘Law, Lawyers and Human Rights’. Congratulations to Award winners Street Law and Margie Tannock. Click here for photos from the Breakfast.
- The Law Access Walk for Justice 2019 attracted 600 supporters and raised over $80,000 for Law Access' pro bono activities.
- The Law Society’s Young Lawyers Committee hosted a special screening of Connection to Country, raising awareness for Indigenous legal issues.
- The Old Court House Law Museum held The Life and Music of Dom Rosendo Salado, with Father Robert Nixon of New Norcia giving his own recital of Salvado’s music and discussing his remarkable life.
- The CPD Day for Rural, Regional and Remote Legal Practitioners provided high-quality CPD at no cost for country members of the
Law Society.
- Law Week concluded with the Law Week Awards Night, including the 2019 Lawyer of the Year Awards. Congratulations to Kelsi Forrest (recipient of the less than five years’ experience award) and Dr Carolyn Tan (recipient of the more than five years’ experience award). The night also included the recognition of practitioners who have held a practising certificate for more than 50 years and acknowledgment of new Law Society Life Members Kevin Edwards, Cav. The Law Society is also a supporter of the National Reconciliation Week Breakfast to be held on Friday, 31 May.
