Click here In welcoming students back to term 2, I reminded them of the Core Values of Respect, Responsibility and Do Your Best, which underpin all activities at our school, be it in the classroom, at sport, on excursions or travelling to from school. I also reminded students of upcoming events; the NAPLAN tests for Years 7 and 9 next week and examinations for Years 7 to 10 will be held in week 5 and all students should be preparing for these. We also welcomed two new staff; Mr Rogers to Social Sciences, and Ms Storok as Head Teacher Vocational Education and Training. I would like to congratulate Ms Cook on being successful and selected as the Principal of Port Macquarie Campus, Hastings Secondary College. I wish her every success in her new role. Whilst the school will advertise for a new Deputy Principal this term, Mr Dick will be Relieving Deputy Principal and looking after Year 9. Mr Lyttle has been on leave for several weeks, but he also will be moving to Port Macquarie Campus for the remainder of the year as Relieving Deputy Principal and Mr Vonbun will continue as Relieving Deputy Principal for students in Years 10 to 12. I thank them both for taking on these roles and look forward to working closely with them. Our Show Team travelled to Kempsey Show in week one and were very successful. Alana Fletcher, Year 11, placed first in the highly competitive 16/17 years junior judging, and Bianca Hamilton, Year 8, 13/14 years, classing the animals according to quality criteria and justifying their choices in front of a crowd of 200 spectators. “Bear”, one of the school’s Limousin steers, was awarded Reserve Champion in the heavy weight class and two of the Brahman steers also placed second in their respective weight classes. A great effort for their first show and a big thank you to Mr Shilling, Mrs Hicks and Mr Martin for their support in making it possible for them to attend. This week, Mr Tony Butler, a retired teacher and member of the Agriculture Society came to the school and worked with staff and students on the finer points of showing and judging cattle. This was very timely as they prepare for Wingham Beef Week and this is sure to give them a winning advantage. Mr Butler returned to the school the following day to tell me what an enjoyable day he had and spoke highly of the outstanding behaviour, cooperation and interest shown by the students. Mr Langley and students from Year 9 hosted the Primary Schools Robotics Competition last week. Year 9 are to be congratulated on their organisation and running of the event which ran very smoothly. The achievements of teams and individuals were acknowledged by the judges, with Herrons Creek being the overall winners. Well done. A great day for all those who were involved. A team of Year 11 girls are now Volleyball State Champions having taken out gold in the Girls Division Two Schools Cup Competition by defeating Plumpton High School in the final. The girls have now been competing together for several years and displayed excellent skills and outstanding sportsmanship. The also competed in the NSW Volleyball State Cup at the weekend, and this has been acknowledged to me personally in an email from a parent of a student from another school. He wished to congratulate the team and said “their attitude, teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm was an inspiration for my daughter who is relatively new to the sport. Good luck to all for the future”. Well done girls and thank you to Mrs Nicholas and Mrs Burdett for their support of the students and enabling them to compete. Mr Hancock and Mr Leighton took our Under 15’s soccer team to Great Lakes to compete in the Bill Turner Cup. While the boys played well they were unfortunately defeated by the very strong competition on the day. A great effort boys. This is a busy term with a lot of activities here at school as well as sporting and cultural opportunities and other excursions. I am looking forward to the many successes I know we will be celebrating during term two.
