The Australian Capital Territory has paved the way for other states and territories to provide age appropriate responses to children in trouble, following its Legislative Assembly voting to raise the age of legal responsibility from 10 to 14 years.

It is the first Australian state or territory to commit to changing its laws to ensure primary school aged children are not incarcerated, after the Council of Attorneys-General decided last month to defer recommendations about the issue. Read the full media release here.

You can help get other states to follow suit by emailing your local MP with a letter prepared by our #WorthASecondChance campaign.

The Northern Territory Opposition plans to reintroduce the offence of breach of bail for young people and legislate a presumption against bail. This will ultimately harm, not help, vulnerable young people. Read more here.

Jesuit Social Services joined more than 50 business, Indigenous, health and community organisations to urge parties to commit to legislate for climate action ahead of Saturday’s Northern Territory election. Read more at The Canberra Times.

Southern Peninsula News covered our upcoming training sessions with boys and men in the area to help people challenge unhealthy masculinities. This project, funded by VicHealth, will follow the findings of our recent Unpacking the Man Box report. Read more here.

Elle Jackson, Manager – Justice Programs in the Northern Territory, had a letter published in the NT News urging the incoming Territory government to focus on giving our children and young people the best chance to flourish. “Harsher sentencing, youth curfews and a corrections-based model have failed children in the Territory, and other jurisdictions, time and time again,” she writes.
