NewsBehind the Microscope: Rheumatoid Arthritis The RAH Rheumatology Unit is taking a “bench to bedside” approach to research with an emphasis on treating chronic auto-immune diseases such as crippling Rheumatoid Arthritis. Hear from its Director, Professor Susanna Proudman on how RAH patients have been central to advances in treatment including the role of fish oils in reducing inflammation and also the contribution of periodontal teeth and gum disease to the condition. Three Minute Thesis The 2019 Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition was held today, bringing together 56 university 3MT finalists from across Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, North-East Asia and South-East Asia. University of Adelaide student Jessica Bohorquez was the winner with her presentation entitled “Guardians of the Pipelines”. Jessica is from the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering and is our first University of Adelaide champion! Congratulations Jessica! Data Science Fellowship Opportunity (USA) The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. Anyone who has already obtained a masters or PhD degree or who is within one year of graduating with a masters or PhD is welcome to apply. The program runs between 13 Jan 2020 and 6 March 2020 and is free for admitted Fellows who have the option to participate in the program in-person in New York, San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, or Washington DC. The Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) Program and Scholarship IEP scholarships are now available to support eligible domestic and international students who undertake an industry placement. The University of Adelaide’s Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) program involves participation in an industry placement of 1-3 months (FTE) in duration, together with the completion of a number of Career and Research Skills Training (CaRST) and other professional development activities. Completion of the IEP, including the compulsory CaRST credit courses, will be reflected as a statement on the academic transcript.
